In the current console generation Sony's MLB The Show has been the reigning champ of baseball video games. There's been some efforts to make other baseball titles, RBI Baseball comes to mind, but none of them hold a candle The Show in terms of production value, style, and most importantly, gameplay. Unfortunately, MLB The Show's relative monopoly on the baseball video game arena meant that in recent years the series' entries got rather stale. They were still of high quality but were basically the same game from year to year. MLB The Show 19 gets the franchise back on the right track and is a great title that proves there's still innovation to be made even when on the top.
Visually speaking, MLB The Show 19 is once again a solid experience, if not an immersive one. Series veterans will notice some of the work put in right away. Umpires have new, lifelike animations. There are new fielding looks that add some diversity to the experience. But video gamers, in general, know the drill at this stage of the console life cycle. Player models look good. Helmets properly (and almost distractingly) reflect the stadium lights. Jerseys sway with movement.Much of last year's game fleshed out the experience around the field of play. Crowds dynamically—and more importantly, properly—react to the events. Dynamic weather turns a bright and sunny day into a misty one. By the way, you can buy

The details affect gameplay in meaningful ways as well. Hard hits that make it over outfielders will now bounce off walls unpredictably, adding a nice twist to fielding. Foul balls will now properly react to making contact with various obstacles or material types in the stadium, rather than appearing to hit off walls without losing any momentum. A ball hitting a hard wall reacts differently to one that hits padding. The stadiums themselves are full of easter eggs. Pesky pole in Fenway Park is now covered in signatures and the All-Star game in Cleveland has small embroidered guitars on the uniforms, adding to the realism.
San Diego Studios’ emphasis on implementing changes based on community feedback and thinking outside of the box with MLB The Show 19 has paid off. It’s the best iteration of the game to date and all the changes are meaningful on and off the field. There are still some legacy issues such as lack of details in certain stadiums, getting some of the ball physics right and the online play. Depending on what mode you focus on, RTTS shines the brightest and March to October is an excellent and varying experience. Diamond Dynasty has enough to keep you coming back for more and this is fueled by the Moments missions. The Show should always be considered as one of the top console exclusive games on the market as MLB The Show 19 is the definitive baseball game of this generation.
