Players are getting to know Octane, the new Apex Legends hero based primarily around speed and mobility in a game that is…also based around speed and mobility, so needless to say he’s pretty popular. Octane is described as an adrenaline junkie constantly in pursuit of speed, hence his abilities to make him move faster and jump higher.
Lore isn't a crucial part of Apex, but in this particular case it makes for a fantastic tie-in with a real-world event. On March 3—more than two weeks before Octane went live—a Titanfall 2 player who goes by the name of Cash Mayo demolished the Gauntlet speedrunning record by chucking a grenade as they came off the start line. More are thrown as they go, and while the subsequent explosions don't appear to have much impact, Mayo gets off to a screaming start and sails through the course at ludicrous speed.
Respawn Entertainment was impressed as well, as that video seemingly inspired Octane’s backstory. “Heir to the preoccupied CEOs of Silva Pharmaceuticals and wanting for nothing in life, he entertained himself by performing death-defying stunts and posting holovids of them for his fans to gawk over,” the official description of Octane explains. “So, this day, he decided to set the course record for a nearby Gauntlet by launching himself across the finish line — using a grenade.” Buy

From the look of things, Respawn Entertainment's choice to not only reference well-known work by Titanfall fans in the creation of this new character but also giving said fan public recognition is a pretty cool move on the part of the developer. The Apex Legend Octane Titanfall connection went deeper than a lot of people originally thought: it went beyond the concept of the character into his origin story and his design. The inclusion of a link to Cash Mayo's original footage was also a nice touch on the part of the company.
Just one look at Apex Legends’ season one battle pass in comparison to something like Fortnite: Battle Royale or even something like Realm Royale will tell you everything you need to know about the rewards on offer. Other games have a theme for their passes, such as Realm Royale’s dinosaurs or Fortnite’s current pirate theme that differentiate it from the base game and previous seasons to offer something exciting and fun—something actually rewarding.
