CALGARY - Josh Jooris and Sean Monahan each scored twice Thursday night to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets in NHL pre-season action. Both goals for Jooris came in the third period. The first, at 4:03, put the Flames (5-3-0) ahead for good at 2-1. Mark Scheifele and Cliff Thorburn scored for Winnipeg (2-4-0). Most of the work on Jooris first goal came from Johnny Gaudreau, who spun away from a Jets defenceman along the boards, than drew the other defenceman towards him before slipping the puck to a wide open Jooris. Monahan made it 3-1 just 40 seconds later, and Jooris scored his second goal at 9:05, again on a nice set-up from another Calgary rookie, Sam Bennett. Gaudreau started the sequence with a nice chip along the boards, and Bennett, the 2014 fourth overall pick, found Jooris with a pass into the slot. Jooris has been a pleasant surprise at Flames camp. Undrafted, the right-winger left Union College after three years to sign with Calgary a year ago. He spent all of last year with the American Hockey Leagues Abbotsford Heat. Jooris, Bennett, Michael Ferland, Sven Baertschi and Gaudreau -- who had three assists -- are battling for what may end up being only one open forward job, depending on injuries. ASHBURN, Va. -- The face was different, the words familiar. Like Mike Shanahan and nearly every recent Washington Redskins coach, Jay Gruden is anxious to declare an end to franchises days of dysfunction. "I dont know what happened last year," Gruden said. "I know that interviewing with Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen and everybody here that the passion for excellence is there. All they want to do is win, and theyre going to provide me with every avenue to win." Gruden was introduced Thursday as the man charged with ending the perpetual state of turmoil the team has endured under owner Snyder and recently under general manager Allen. Gruden was a given a five-year contact for his first NFL head coaching gig, taking over a 3-13 team that has finished last in the NFC East in five of the last six seasons. "We HAVE to get it right," said Allen, who led the search and interviewed six candidates. "We need to get the franchise back on track in a winning direction. ... We were looking for a new leader, somebody who can inspire our football team. We knew it was more than just X and Os, it was about finding the right person to build a team chemistry that we needed." Gruden is Snyders eighth coach in 16 seasons as an NFL owner. Unlike Shanahan, who was fired last week, Gruden will not have final say over all football matters. Hell report to Allen, who has taken charge of assembling the roster and other personnel decisions. Snyder attended the news conference but did not speak to reporters. The 46-year-old Gruden has spent the last three seasons as the offensive co-ordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, where his skill in helping to develop Andy Dalton will no doubt be of use when he takes on the task of grooming another young franchise quarterback, Robert Griffin III. Gruden praised the talents of Griffin and spoke of the need to build a "genuine" trust with the quarterback, who regressed this season after winning the APs Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2012. Griffin returned from major knee surgery to start 13 games, but he publicly disagreed with some of Shanahans decisions, struggled as a drop-back passer and was benched for the final three weeks. Asked to confirm that Griffin will be the starter, Gruden chuckled and said: "I dont see him as a backup." "I see every trait that a quarterback has to have to be successful, I see Robert having all of those," Gruden said. "So why wouldnt you want to coach a guy like that? ... Im going to let him know that Im a trustworthy guy. Hes also got to understand that I expect a lot from the starting quarterback. I expect him to come in and prepare and work hard, and I expect him to take the blame on some throws. I expect him to be a great leader." Griffin limited his comments to a quick post on his Facebook page: "Excited about the hiring of Coach Jay Gruden. Cant wait to get to work with him & the guys!" Gruden said he will call the plays himself and that he has yet to decide which members of Shanahans staff to retain. It seems a safe bet, however, that some combination of defensive co-ordinator Jim Haslett, defensive backs coach Raheem Morris and tight ends coach Sean McVay has a good chance of sticking around, based on the trios previous relationship with the new coach. Gruden also said hes a fan of the 3-4 defence that Haslett has used the last four years. "I know theres a lot of coaches here who can coach," Gruden said. Gruden has been largely overshadowed by his more famous brother, Jon Gruden, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is now an analyst on "Monday Night Football." But Jay Gruden has been a name on the rise based on his success with Dalton and the Bengals offence. Jay Gruden interviewed for multiple head coaching openings last year and had drawn interest from at least three other teams seeking to fill a head coaching vacancy this year. He interviewed with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday. The Redskins had to wait until the Bengals played their first-round playoff game before Gruden could be courted. It took a bad day from Gruden and Dalton -- scoring only 10 points in a home loss to the San Diego Chargers -- to make Gruden free to be hired this week. "I told him it worked out well that Cincinnati lost," Allen said. "He still doesnt understand that." Gruden said his ties within the Washington organization played a "big role" in his decision. He was an assistant coach with Tampa Bay from 2002-08, where he worked at various times with Allen, Morris and McVay. Gruden also coached under Haslett with the UFLs Florida Tuskers in 2009. Theres no question Gruden has paid his dues. He was a quarterback in the long-defunct World League of American Football, then went to the Arena Football League and began a playing and coaching career that was so successful it landed him in the AFL Hall of Fame in 1999. Hes been a head coach both the AFL and UFL, including two stints with the AFLs Orlando Predators. In 2010, after Haslett left for the Redskins, Gruden was head coach and general manager of the Tuskers and led them to the UFL championship game. "Theres a lot of work to do," Gruden said. VILLARREAL, Spain -- Spanish police arrested the man who racially insulted Barcelona defender Dani Alves by throwing a banana at him, with reports on Wednesday claiming the perpetrator worked for Villarreal. Police confirmed 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo was arrested, with Spanish media reporting he was fired from his role on the coaching staff of one of the clubs youth teams. Villarreal would not confirm nor deny the reports about Campayo Lleos role with the club when questioned about their authenticity by The Associated Press. Campayo Lleo faces from one to three years in prison if found guilty of charges related to racist provocation. Villarreal has already banned Campayo Lleo from the teams El Madrigal Stadium for life. "Hes living in the stone ages," Johnson said in an interview that aired Tuesday with CNNs Anderson Cooper, a day after Sterling made his first public comments since racist recordings emerged last month and earned him a lifetime NBA ban. "You cant make those comments about African-Americans and Latinos. You just cant do it." In Sterlings interview with Cooper, Sterling repeatedly brought up the ex-NBA stars HIV and called him an unfit role model for children. Johnson mostly avoided lashing back at criticism from Sterling, who at one point cut off Coopers listing of Johnsons achievements to loudly say "Hes got AIDS!" Johnson, who is HIV positive but does not have AIDS, said he was surprised Sterling didnt make the distinction. "Heres a man who you would think would be educated, and a man who is smart enough to build this type of wealth and own a team and have an incredible platform to change the world," Johnson said. "But hes doing it in a negative way." Johnson is now a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and was once a part-owner of the Lakers after the playing career that was cut short by his contracting HIV in 1991. "I came out like a man, I told the world," Johnson said of his famous public press conference announcing his retirement. "I didnt blame nobody else. I understood what I did was wrong. And I hope that I was able to help people." Johnson, who said he has known Sterling since he first came to LA to play for the Lakers more than 30 years ago, said he didnt know how he got stuck in the middle of a situation that should have been a personal dispute between Sterling and V. Oh yes, the Bearkats are even happier to be advancing in the FCS playoffs after they defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 21-17, in the first round. Sam Houston (9-4) will travel to third-seeded Jacksonville State (10-1), the Ohio Valley Conference champion, for a second-round showdown next Saturday. Sam Houston and Southeastern (9-4) tied for the Southland title with 7-1 records, but they didnt face each other in the 11-team conference. The Bearkats, under first-year coach K.C. Keeler, overcame four turnovers, playing well defensively in the second half and getting an important block of a Southeastern field goal attempt during the fourth quarter. The Lions were trying to extend a 17-14 lead, but defensive end P.J. Hall (four tackles for loss, one sack) blocked Ryan Adams 46-yard attempt with 8:37 left. The Bearkats then drove 59 yards in seven plays, going ahead 21-17 on Donovan Williams 5-yard run. Southeastern had three final drives, but one started at their 6-yard line and their final one from their 1. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Three games isnt a large sample size by any means, but the Nashville Predators are already seeing results under new head coach Peter Laviolette. If there was ever a team in need of an identity change, it was the Predators. For 15 seasons since its inception prior to the 1998-99 season, Nashville was guided behind the bench by Barry Trotz. And to his credit, Trotz managed to do some great things with minimal resources. Nashville reached the playoffs seven times over an eight-season span from 2004-12, but missing out on the postseason in back-to-back years finally brought about the end of the Trotz era. Under Trotz, the Predators were always known as a defensively strong team, with the likes of Kimmo Timonen and Ryan Suter making a name for themselves while with the Preds. In fact, it is a defenseman in Shea Weber who serves as captain and is the most recognizable face of the franchise. Weber leads a still-strong unit that also contains the talented Roman Josi and a potential future blue line star in Seth Jones. Thats where Laviolette comes in. His job was to get Nashville more balanced on offense -- Webers 23 goals last season ranked second on the club -- and so far he has been up to the task. Nashville has scored nine goals through three games. Again, a small sample size but consider that the Predators averaged just 2.61 goals per game last season and 2.27 the campaign prior. A telling sign that Laviolettes system is working is the fast start by Filip Forsberg. The 20-year-old Swede has a goal and three assists through three games after managing just five points total in 13 games last season with Nashville. Forsberg was the 11th overall pick of the 2012 draft by Washington, which sent him to Nashville on April 3, 2013 for Martin Erat. Forsberg has had offensive success in Sweden and the AHL, and broke out with four goals and 12 points in seven games for his country at the 2014 Winter Olympics, but has struggled to stick in the NHL. He may finally emerge as a scoring threat under Laviolette if this pace keeps up. Im just trying to play as hard as I can every night; thats something I learned last year when I was starting out, Forsberg told Nashvilles website. Ive been really trying to earn my ice time, and it feels good to get this chance. Hopefully I can continue to keeping playing good here. While he never got a chance with the Capitals and played in only 18 games under Trotz in two seasons, Laviolette currently has Forsberg on his top line with Mike Ribeiro and James Neal. Nashville also has been a tough team to play under Laviolette in the early going. The Preds posted three-goal third periods in winning their first two games of the season versus Ottawa and Dallas after needing 20 games last season to record a pair of three-goal final frames. What makes the Predators offense a potential force is the fact that Neal, the clubs big offseason acquisition from Pittsburgh, has yet to get going. Its only a matter of time, though, as the winger has fired 12 shots in three games and is toping Nashville forwards with 17 minutes and 53 seconds of ice time. Steve Downie returned to score twice for Pittsburgh after missing the last five games because of the mumps and Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, Andrew Ebbett and Christian Ehrhoff also found the net in the teams second consecutive win after four straight losses. The Toronto Blue Jays entire plans for the approaching July 31 non-waiver trade deadline may have been drastically altered, if not shut down, by Sundays injury news. Brett Lawrie is likely gone for 4-6 weeks with a broken finger on his right hand, and Jose Bautista is possibly following him to the disabled list with a hamstring issue on his right leg. Before those injuries and during that ugly 3-7 road trip, there was talk the Blue Jays were scouting Rays ace lefty David Price and might have an interest in the multi-talented Ben Zobrist, who can play nearly any position on the diamond. Both players would be an immense help to the Blue Jays, but the odds of either ending up in Toronto are slim and none. It all goes back to that old cliché about not trading within your division. This is Tampa Bays 17th year of existence. Over that span, the Devil Rays/Rays have only made four trades within the American League East, and it might even be a stretch to say even one of those was significant. In fact, they have made only one deal apiece with the Yankees and Red Sox. The Yankees deal goes back over eight years to May 24, 2006. The Yanks bought Nick Green from the Rays. Thats it. The Boston trade goes back even further to July 21,1999. The Rays dealt Dominican-born reliever Julio Santana to the Reds Sox for a player to be named later (Will Silverthorn) and cash. Santana spent seven years in the Majors - including a brief stint with Montreal - but never did pitch for the Red Sox after that deal. The Rays have made three trades with Baltimore but none since August 7, 2009. Arguably the biggest deal between the Rays and Os happened March 29, 1999, when Tampa Bay dealt right hander Jason Johnson to the Orioles for Danny Clyburn and a minor leaguer by the name of Bolivar Volquez. Again, hardly a blockbuster. On August 7, 2007 the Rays picked up catcher Gregg Zahn from the 0s for a player to be named later, named Rhyne Hughes. Zahn was 38 at the time and about a year from calling it a career. All of which brings us to the Blue Jays. They havent made a trade with the Rays in nearly 10 years. On December 12, 2004, they sent catcher Kevin Cash to Tampa Bay for right hander Chad Gaudin. The deal with the Rays that was supposed to have the biggest impact for the Jays happened on July 31, 2000. The Blue Jays looking to add some pitching depth for the stretch run dealt second base prospect Brent Abernathy to the Rays for right hander Steve Trachsel and veteran reliever Mark Guthrie. The deal failed to push Jim Fregosis Jays over the top. Overall, if you look at all eight of the deals the Rays have made without their division, only one - the Trachsel-Guthrie for Abernathy trade - actually came on the July 31 deadline. Most of the trades were inconsequential and none involved a star player. The Rays, as mentioned, havent even made a deal in the East since August 7, 2009, so dont hold your breath waiting for the Jays or any other team in the East to get Price or Zobrist. He went on to hit .273 for his career with five different organizations with 2019 hits and 3030 homers. He was one of those rare individuals who seemed to get better with age. In 2005, at age 33 he played the entire 162 game schedule. He slugged 29 home runs with Seattle last year at age 41. He also made it to the postseason in five different seasons. If he wants to remain in the game, there are bound to be plenty of organizations willing to give him a chance. If the Jays are going to stay in playoff contention, they have to pick it up against the East - 47 of their remaining 85 games are against their own division and they have slipped to 15-14 versus the East.
