CLEVELAND -- The Browns may soon learn whether theyll have Josh Gordon this season. The Pro Bowl wide receiver will have an appeal hearing with NFL officials in New York on Aug. 1, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions. The game-breaking playmaker is facing a possible one-year ban for violating the leagues substance abuse policy for at least the third time. Gordon, who had a history of marijuana abuse in college, was suspended for the first two games last season. He still led the NFL with 1,646 yards receiving. The 23-year-old player is expected to report to training camp Friday and hell be on the field Saturday as the Browns have their first practice under new coach Mike Pettine. According to reports, Gordon recently checked himself into rehab following an arrest in North Carolina. ESPNs Adam Shefter said Gordon spent two weeks at a facility in California. The Browns have been patiently waiting for a resolution on Gordons playing status, and his uncertain future has left a cloud over the team. The Browns first learned of a potential extended suspension on the second day of the NFL draft in May. The ESPN report doused the optimism created after the Browns, who have had only two winning seasons since 1999, drafted quarterback Johnny Manziel. On Wednesday, Pettine told the AP hes not consumed with worry about whether hell have Gordon. "The frustration has really faded," Pettine said. "Its just something thats there. Its equivalent of having that file folder with all the answers in it and its sitting there ready to go. Its just got a lot of dust. Were just waiting to hear from the league and well act accordingly." If Gordon loses his appeal, he could be banned by Commissioner Roger Goodell for a minimum of one year. He would then have to apply for re-instatement. Gordon has complicated his case with two recent legal infractions. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after speeding down a street in Raleigh, North Carolina, last month. In May, he was ticketed for speeding in Ohio, and a passenger in his car was cited for marijuana possession. Pettine said the Browns have no plans to release Gordon. The team intends to support him and give him any help he may need. "Josh is a Cleveland Brown and we want whats best for him and we want whats best for us," Pettine said. "Hes smart. Hes bright. LeBron James reportedly decided to opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Heres a few quick thoughts of what this Decision means to me. 1. CONTROL: Hes the best player by far on the planet so its his contractual right to exercise this clause and I agree with him. Old-timers and traditionalists might not like it but its the reality of pro sports in the 21st century. Great actors/actresses set the tone and select what movies/plays they want to perform in and who they want to work with and for and LeBron is at that level in the "sports/entertainment industry" that former NBA commissioner David Stern created with the emphasis on stars over teams. This is a creation of that. Right, wrong or indifferent - it is what it is. Hes negotiated and earned the right to reconsider and re-explore what hed like to do with his career. The man is serious about his game and is a student of the game and wants/needs some space here to evaluate. 2. MIAMI HEAT: We all saw them with our own eyes in the NBA Finals vs. the Spurs. The reality is that the current team as constructed needs major improvements or they wont challenge against the superior Western Conference teams for an NBA title. In addition, if an Eastern team like the Chicago Bulls gets back a healthy Derrick Rose and is able to acquire Kevin Love and/or Carmelo Anthony who is to say that theyre even the No. 1 contender in the East anymore? Do you honestly believe that Dwyane Wade is going to give you 70-75+ regular season games and four playoff rounds at a high level at $20 million per year? Is Chris Bosh still committed to playing in all areas of the game rather than just becoming a jump shooter? If Im LeBron I have my doubts. A few smart tweaks with Wade and Bosh sacrificing some money opens up the possibility of it all working again...yet its far from a sure thing. 3. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS: Owner Dan Gilbert blasted LeBron on the way out the door after "The Decision". Does LeBron forgive and forget? Does new GM David Griffin have the wherewithal/pedigree to pull off such a heist? He and Kyrie Irving together - not bad. They have the No. 1 Pick and some talented young guys they can package to move to Minnesota for Kevin Love. How does Irving, Love and LeBron sound to you? It would be a better Big Three at this point that the Miami version even though both Love and Irving have put up "numbers", yet still havent shown me yet that theyre truly special. What a return this would be. 4. OTHER SUITORS (Chicago, Houston, LA Lakers): Youll hear about all three and more in the hunt for the King. Needless to say, you put him on the Bulls or Rockets and theyre in the hunt for a title. The Lakers? Kobe and LeBron would be an interesting pairing but what does the rest of the roster look like? How long does Kobe hold up? Lots more questions than answers in LA. The rumour mill will surely be filled with gossip from all three of these spots. 5. TORONTO RAPTORS: Not saying this because its wishful thinking on my part. Seriously, why not? They desperately need a starting small forward. You put him with a re-signed Kyle Lowry, Demar DeRozan, a re-signed Patrick Patterson and Jonas Valanciunas with a re-signed Greivis Vasquez, Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson and Ill take my chances with anyone in the East. On a league-wide scale Im not scared by anyone with that crew on my side. You want hoops to grow in Toronto and across the country - go for it. Nothing to lose. Realistic? Maybe not but honestly thats not a bad eight-man core whatsoever. Obviously, the salary cap/luxury tax always comes into play but for a player of this magnitude you explore every possibility. The New Orleans Saints offence ranked fourth in total yards in 2013, while quarterback Drew Brees finished behind only NFL MVP Peyton Manning in passing yards. In 2014, the Saints will have the offensive weapons to compete for the title of the leagues preeminent offence. The Saints will be without offensive stalwarts of the past Darren Sproles and Lance Moore this season, after Sproles was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles and Moore was cut in the offseason. However, the Saints replaced Moore with first-round draft pick Brandin Cooks and previously had the running back depth to move Sproles. The group of receivers Brees will throw to this year may be more talented than any other unit in the league, featuring veterans Marques Colston and Robert Meachem joined with speedsters Cooks and Kenny Stills. Coltson posted less than 1,000 yards receiving last year for the first time since 2008 - when he only played in 11 games. His final stat line was 75 catches for 943 yards and five touchdowns. Yet, Colston was bothered by a foot injury in each of his past two seasons and claims to be in full health entering his age 31 season. "Its a totally different experience for me just being able to really rest and come into the season healthy," Colston told ESPN after reporting to training camp. Colston is slated to open the season as the receiver across from Stills. Stills, selected in the fifth round (144th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, took defences by surprise in his rookie season, averaging 20 yards per catch. Stills finished with 32 receptions for 641 yards and five touchdowns. Hes primed to top those marks in 2014 as an every-week starter. By all accounts, Cooks impressed the Saints coaches, players and media throughout training camp and should be a key contributor to the teams explosive offence this season. Cooks posted an astounding 128 catches for 1730 yards at Oregon State University in 2013. He also rushed for 217 yards on 32 carries. Meachem and third-year receiver Nick Toon should complete the teams strong receiving corps. The biggest playmaker for the offence will not carry wide receiver title, despite his off-season attempt to earn the designation. Tight end Jimmy Graham will once again be the focal point for the offence in 2014, after leading the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns last season. Brees favourite weapon posted a league-high 16 touchdowns in 2013 and the only thing holding him back from repeating as the scoring leader may be added competition. The Saints offence will be balanced by running backs Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Thomas led the team with 549 yards rushing last season and added 77 receptions for 513 yards. ALAMEDA, Calif. - Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie never doubted he would bring back coach Dennis Allen for a third year despite back-to-back 4-12 records. If anything, McKenzie believes the team is on the cusp of turning around what has been a decade-long tailspin and likes the direction the franchise is moving under Allen.
