I like alliteration. Its very radio friendly, perhaps not so much in print. It was the Ms that dominated the story-lines on what was a memorable weekend for the Whitecaps. Marketing: The Whitecaps should win an award for one of the best sporting campaigns this city has ever seen. Sometimes, consumers buy in early, and drive an event which then takes on a life of its own. And sometimes, a gentle nudge from creative types can spark the consumers imagination. What happened on Saturday was a perfect combination of both, punctuated by a thrilling, talking point laden 3-2 win. The level of detail and commitment by everyone involved, made for a day most of us wont soon forget. Manneh: The youngster started, and rewarded his manager with a terrific opening goal just 10 minutes in, which got the crowd involved, and the adrenaline pumping. I cant remember seeing the same player hit one post, before coolly floating in the rebound off the other upright. It was exactly what the Whitecaps needed. Morales: The refreshed looking midfield maestro ran the show in the first 45, scored from the penalty spot, and then less than a minute later added his third MLS goal with a perfect blast. He might have had two others earlier. It was the unbridled passion with which he celebrated the 3-0 goal that Whitecaps supporters will remember. He likes it here. He wants to win. Hes worth the price of admission. Mattocks: The young Jamaican has been arguably the most important player for Vancouver this season, when it seemed like six months ago, he would be run out of town after some bizarre comments made while he was home. Hes embraced the coaching, his level of understanding has improved and his ability to terrorize defenders was plainly evident, as he earned another penalty kick on a rather immobile looking Victor Bernardez. So it should worry everyone in the Village that Mattocks had to be replaced early with what was described as a hamstring strain. The timing couldnt be worse given the schedule congestion thats ahead, and with the departure of another "M". Miller: We knew divorce was imminent, but most didnt expect the news on Sunday morning, especially after the Mattocks injury. Carl Robinson is trying to shape a young and hungry club, and while there does need to be some veteran guidance, the money versus performance return gap was widening, and becoming more difficult to justify. I also get the sense that the club wants to conduct more business, and that will be easier to accomplish with the budget relief theyll now have. Miller was a great pro, looked up to by his teammates and likely to land at least one more contract before his storied career is over. And if you turn an "M" upside down, it becomes a "W" something the Whitecaps desperately needed. With their "hang-on-for-dear-life" 3-2 triumph over San Jose, Vancouver went from being winless in four, to undefeated in three. A great start to the month of "M"ay. Gelson Martins Jersey . CBS Sports Jon Heyman is reporting that Santana will sign a one-year deal, likely in the next two days with one of a trio of suitors, with the Toronto Blue Jays believed to be heavily involved. Cedric Jersey . Bozak and Clarkson suffered the injuries in pre-training camp workouts, according to Carlyle, who said they made "small amounts of improvement" from Friday to Saturday. After the players were deemed less than 100 per cent by doctors after Thursdays medical testing, the Leafs held them out of on-ice testing and are being cautious. Anthony Lopes Portugal Jersey . So with the game on the line late, Houstons star was determined to atone for his earlier mistakes. "I had to figure a way to make it even," Harden said. He did. Harden scored 35 points and his layup with 0.7 seconds remaining lifted the Rockets to a 113-112 win over the Wizards, sending Houston into the All-Star break with a season-best seven-game winning streak. John Wall gave Washington the lead with a pair of free throws with 4 seconds left. Trevor Ariza fouled out when he pushed Harden to the ground on the ensuing inbounds pass. It was ruled a foul away from the play, giving Houston one free throw and possession. Harden, who was 16 for 16 at the line, made the free throw before grabbing a pass from Chandler Parsons and driving into the lane for the winning shot. Harden was asked to explain his work on the last play. "Get to the rim and make the play," he said. "Its simple." The Wizards had a chance to win at the end, but Kevin Seraphins shot clanged off the rim. Ariza had 11 rebounds and a season-high 32 points with a career-best and franchise-record 10 3-pointers to lead the Wizards. "Its too bad, these guys deserved to win that game," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "To have it taken from them like that, its sad." Houston won despite committing a season-high 26 turnovers that led to 24 points by the Wizards. The Rockets were helped by making 35 free throws while Washington hit only eight. The Wizards trailed by 18 in the third quarter before a barrage of 3s from Ariza got his team back in the game. His 10 3-pointers were the most ever against the Rockets. Ariza was 7 for 7 on 3s in the third and made six in a 4-minute span late in the quarter, including three in an incredible 32-second stretch. Five straight points, capped by a three-point play by Wall, put the Wizards up 110-108 with 2:21 remaining in the fourth. Houston had a shot-clock violation on the next possession, but Nene fouled out with an offensive foul on the other end. Harden made two free throws with 223.dddddddddddd2 seconds left to tie it at 110. Nene had 21 points, Bradley Beal scored 20 and Wall finished with 19 points, 14 assists and three steals. Dwight Howard added 24 points with 16 rebounds for Houston, and Parsons scored 18. An 8-3 run by Washington cut Houstons lead to two midway through the fourth quarter. The Rockets scored the next five points to stretch the lead before five quick points by Washington got it back down to two with 4 minutes left. A 3-point shot by Beal got Washington within five with about 9 minutes left in the third quarter. The Rockets scored 13 straight points after that to extend the lead to 83-65. Harden had five points in that stretch, and he and Howard brought the crowd to its feet when Harden found the big man for a monster alley-oop dunk. The Wizards missed shot after shot and didnt score four more than 4 minutes while Houston built the lead. They missed from long-range, mid-range and even botched two layups. Washington finally ended the scoring drought thanks to Ariza. He made his second 3-pointer of the quarter with less than 5 minutes left in the third. He made three more 3s on consecutive possessions a couple of minutes later to cut Houstons lead to 90-79. But he wasnt done yet, and made two more on back-to-back trips down the court to make it 93-87 with a minute remaining in the quarter. Wall got in on the fun on the next possession, sinking a 3 of his own, to leave Houston clinging to a 93-90 lead entering the fourth quarter. Ariza seemed unimpressed by his big night. "I was open and there were good looks and I was just letting them fly," he said. The Rockets used a 10-3 spurt to regain a 52-46 lead late in the second. Howard and Harden each made two free throws in the last 30 seconds of the half to extend Houstons advantage to 63-54 at the break. NOTES: Patrick Beverley missed the game with an abdominal strain, and Jeremy Lin started in his place. ... Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon watched the game from a courtside seat. ... Ex-Rocket Clyde Drexler presented Harden and Howard with framed All-Star jerseys to celebrate their selection to this weekends game. Harden is in the game for the second time and its the eighth time Howard has received the nod. New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Derick Brassard scored two goals, Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves and the New York Rangers posted a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers to sweep a home-and-home series. Brassards second goal broke a 2-2 tie and was one of three scored by the Rangers in the third period. Jesper Fast netted his first NHL goal and added an assist for the Rangers, who have won 10 straight regular-season games against the Flyers played at Madison Square Garden. Were playing the right way and hopefully were on the right path, said Brassard. After being shut out by Cam Talbot in each of the teams first two meetings this season, the Flyers were able to finally light the lamp, but they suffered their fourth consecutive loss and eighth in the last nine games. Ray Emery allowed four goals on 34 shots in defeat. We have a really good team. We just have to build that confidence and, I know its a cliche, but get that first win and build from it, said Flyers forward Vincent Lecavalier. Weve had spurts of playing the right way but not consistently. Brassard buried a feed from Kevin Hayes on a 3-on-2 rush to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead at 3:06 of the third. J.T. Miller scored on a wraparound to make it 4-2 at 9:54, and Lee Stempniak added an empty-net goal with 23.9 seconds left. The Flyers got into early penalty trouble, as Claude Giroux received a double minor for a high sticking while in the offensive zone just a minute after the games opening faceoff. On the ensuing power play, Brassard opened the scoring at 2:50 off a Rick Nash pass following a failed clearing attempt by Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn. The Flyers broke through against the Rangers with 6:14 left in the first period. Nicklas Grossmann collected a loose puck and beat Lundqvist high on the blocker side with a shot from the right circle. Jakub Voracek gave Philadelphia the lead with a power-play goal at 8:45 of the second period, but Fast tied it at 11:38. Game Notes The Rangers announced before Saturdays game that forward Tanner Glass has been diagnosed with the mumps and will be isolated from the team for several days. New York also played without defenseman Dan Boyle (flu-like symptoms) and forward Chris Kreider (personal) ... The Flyers began a five-game road trip. LONDON -- England captain Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from international football on Monday to focus on playing for Liverpool. The 34-year-old midfielder made 114 appearances for England over 14 years. Gerrard said he "agonized" over his future after the World Cup in Brazil, where England went out after the first round. He told the Football Association that "this has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest Ive had to make in my career." Gerrards career with the Three Lions began with a 2-0 win against Ukraine in 2000. He is third all-time in appearances for England behind goalkeeper Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115). Gerrard was captain for 38 internationals and scored 21 goals, including three in his 12 World Cup appearances. "I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country and it is a sad day for me knowing that I wont pull on the England shirt again," Gerrard said. "To ensure I can keep playing to a high level and giving everything to Liverpool Football Club I believe this is the right decision." England manager Roy Hodgson was "disappointed" with the decision, but said he understood it. "I must respect his wishes due to the discussions we have had and the amount of thought and consideration he himself has given it," Hodgson said. "We shall miss his leadership qualities as we look ahead to the (Euro 2016) qualification campaign with a youthful group of players." Julie Ertz Jersey . For the first time in his tenure with the Blue Jays, the superstar shortstop is healthy and wreaking havoc on the bases. Hes once again the catalyst that made him famous - not to mention rich - and a current teammate who watched Reyes up close while with the Mets likes what hes seeing. “I think its just really a matter of health for him, but as far as what hes showing it is very similar to the guy that won the batting title the year that I was with him in New York,” knuckleballer R.A. Dickey told TSN.ca. The year to which Dickey is referring is 2011, Reyess last of nine seasons with the club that signed him as a 16-year-old amateur free agent in 1999. Reyes hit .337/.384/.493, career bests to this day. He walked more times that year (43) than he struck out (41), which has happened only one other time. It could occur again this season; so far Reyes has taken 15 free passes and whiffed 15 times. Reyes already has 11 stolen bases, only four shy of his injury-plagued 2013 total. Hes been caught stealing only once. With Melky Cabrera hitting behind Reyes, manager John Gibbons has executed the hit-and-run and Cabreras found the holes created by the defence. “The thing that I thought made him so special was there were so many different ways that he could impact a game in New York,” said Dickey. “Last year he was limited with his ankle injury and you didnt really get to see what he was capable of doing at all, really, because when he came back he was still kind of limping around.” The Blue Jays have been at or near the top of baseball in key offensive statistics like home runs (76 – 1st), slugging percentage (.450 – 2nd), on-base plus slugging (.781 – 2nd) and walks (179 – 6thh).ddddddddddddTheyve been creeping up the ladder in on-base percentage and now sit fourth in the majors (.331). “The genesis of any good team is guys with good on-base percentage,” said Dickey. “I think what were seeing this year that we might not have had much consistency with last year is that factor. Guys are getting on base. Pillar, Gose, Tollesons a big pick up the way hes playing. Melkys on base all the time.” Dickey, the pitcher, then offers a thought on what it must be like to be a mound opponent of the Blue Jays these days. “The less breaths that youre allowed to take, the harder the outing,” said Dickey. “Really, in our lineup the way that its going, you have to hold your breath the whole game and thats tough on a starter because you constantly have to execute pitch after pitch after pitch after pitch and youre not really allowed to have a lapse. When you feel like you cant have a lapse, or else, it can influence other pitches.” RASMUS REHAB PLAN Colby Rasmus, on the disabled list since May 13 with tightness in his right hamstring, would prefer to avoid a minor-league rehabilitation assignment and get right back into the Blue Jays line-up when hes activated. The sentiment isnt shared by his skipper. “He needs to go down and play,” said manager John Gibbons. “Hes been doing some running and things like that. The trainers, they usually come to me when hes about ready and we put a game plan together. But, yeah, he needs to go down and play some games.” The Blue Jays are enthused about the platoon combination of Anthony Gose and Kevin Pillar the club has employed since Rasmus got hurt. Entering Tuesdays action, in the 13 games Rasmus has missed, the Jays have gone 11-2. Goses speed has created runs on offence and hes often made difficult plays look routine in centre field. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Derek Norris took a turn in the ever-changing rotation of Oakland Athletics to end games in dramatic fashion. Norris singled up the middle with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th inning against former Oakland closer Grant Balfour, and the Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Monday night. "Ive had a quite a few opportunities tonight to put the ball in play," Norris said. "It was just good I could come up and finally get the game over with." Norris notched his second career game-ending RBI while facing Balfour (1-4) in Oaklands eighth walkoff win. The AL West-leading As remained one game ahead of the Los Angeles Angels and avoided losing consecutive home games for just the second time this season. The As loaded the bases against Balfour, who received a mound visit before Brandon Moss stepped in with a chance at a fourth grand slam but struck out. Norris delivered with his first game-ending RBI since June 24, 2012, against the Giants. "I just got beat by a good team tonight, plain and simple," Balfour said. "Its tough when you have to get five outs." Rays manager Joe Maddon was ejected by first base umpire Quinn Wolcott on an "egregious" non-strike call during on Josh Donaldsons 10th-inning walk and rushed the field to argue once more. Ryan Cook (1-1) earned the win on a night the As stranded a season-high 18 runners. The As won their 11th extra-inning game, second-most in the majors behind Baltimore. Tampa Bay had its eight-game road winning streak snapped, which matched the longest in club history, to kick off a 10-game trip. The Rays lost away from Tropicana Field for the first time since July 3 at Detroit and dropped to 23-10 overall since June 25. In the ninth, reliever Sean Doolittle fielded Brandon Guyers bouncing safety squeeze bunt and tossed about 10 feet to catcher Norris to tag out James Loney and save the go-ahead run. Doolittle then struck out Kevin Kiermaier. Until Norris came through, Oakland had missed key chances with runners in scoring position. The As loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh against Joel Peralta. Coming off consecutive series losses for only the second time this season, the As avoided losing back-to-back at home for the first time since May 5-6 against Seattle. Josh Donaldson singled in the tying run in the sixth. Evan Longoria homered and Kiermaier hit a two-out triple to set up Desmond Jennings fifth-inning RBI single against Jeff Samardzija. "It seems to be my M.O. since Ive been here, I go out and throw some innings and then watch these guys put on a show at the end of the game," he said. With six ex-Rays on Oaklands roster, Maddon has taken to calling them the "Ra-As." FURRY FRIEND An opossum wandered into left field to watch during extra innings, right before John Jaso stepped in. Hes no stranger to little creatures, having batted with a squirrel in the infield and a pigeon near the plate this year, too. Samardzija says its about time to make it the mascot. "Hes been out here before," the pitcher said. "Were going to have to give him a name, get him a jersey. Weve got to keep feeding him." TRAINERS ROOM Rays: Outfielder Wil Myers, on the 60-day disabled list recovering from a broken right wrist, went through an extensive workout and drills in Port Charlotte, Florida. He will likely do a similar session Tuesday and Maddon said the Rays could decide by the end of the week when to begin his rehab assignment. Athletics: Center fielder Coco Crisp took batting practice and came off the bench as a pinch-hitter in the seventh after missing seven games with a strained neck. He will be back in the starting lineup Tuesday. ... Right-hander Jarrod Parker played catch out to 45 feet for his first throwing session since Tommy John surgery in the spring. ON DECK Rays: Drew Smyly (6-9, 3.93 ERA) makes his Tampa Bay debut after being traded from Detroit for David Price last Thursday. "I dont look at it as Im replacing David," he said. "Youre not going to replace David Price." Athletics: Right-hander Jason Hammel (0-4) tries again for his first victory in five starts since being traded from the Chicago Cubs on July 4. He is one of three pitchers in Oakland history to lose each of their first four starts. AL Pitcher of the Month Sonny Gray goes in Wednesdays finale. Michy Batshuayi Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. With Gretzky paid out for what is believed to be $7 to 8 million, Gretzky may be eager to get back into the NHL and TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that the Maple Leafs are very much interested in The Great Ones services. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins postponed their series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday because of inclement weather, the second straight game they had washed out at Target Field. The Twins announced the decision in the early afternoon, more than six hours before the scheduled first pitch, and slotted the makeup for Thursday as part of a day-night doubleheader. The Twins had a day off on Monday, meaning they havent played since Saturday afternoon. Coaches and players came to the ballpark to work out a little bit and try to stay limber, while a cold, wet system stayed stuck over Minnesota with a forecast to linger well into the week. Temperatures have been in the high 30s and low 40s, with steady rain falling since Saturday night and a bit of snow mixed in at times, too. "They feel like they havent been out there in a year, and its only been a few days," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, adding: "Mother Natures winning right now." The predicted high for Wednesday was 45 degrees, with the chance of precipitation pegged at 70 per cent, so that game could be in trouble, too. "Mother Nature is what Mother Nature is. Thats one of those many aspects of life and baseball that you cant do anything about," said right-hander Kyle Gibson, who was supposed to start on Sunday, and on Tuesday, and will now take the mound on Wednesday opposite Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke. Maybe. "You hope that we can step right back into it and get into a flow," Gardenhire said. Well, if the weather wont relent, theres always an NHL playoff game to watch. The Wild will play at Colorado in Game 7 of their first-round series on Wednesday night. "Im going to challenge something early and get thrown out of the game and come in here and watch hockey," Gardenhire joked in his office. The Dodgers, who were to begin a nine-game road trip, werent available for comment. They were scheduled to startt Dan Haren on Wednesday and Josh Beckett on Thursday, but their rotation for the reshuffled series was yet to be determined.dddddddddddd The Twins picked Mike Pelfrey for the original game on Thursday afternoon, but Gardenhire said they hadnt determined the starter for the makeup game on Thursday night. Ricky Nolascos turn would be next, but teams are allowed to call up a 26th player for doubleheaders. So a Triple-A pitcher could make a spot start if either or both teams wanted to avoid using Greinke and/or Gibson on short rest this Sunday. This was the 11th postponed game for the Twins in five seasons at Target Field, six of which have been over the past two Aprils. Their scheduled series finale on Sunday against the Tigers was pushed to either August or September when the Tigers make their return trips. Rescheduling the Dodgers would be far more difficult, because this is their only planned visit. The next common day off for the teams is May 19, when the Dodgers would have to make a one-day stop between series in Arizona and New York. There are only two other mutual openings on the 2014 schedule outside of the All-Star break, but those would require the Dodgers (July 28) and Twins (August 25) to play 24 straight days. The collective bargaining agreement prohibits teams from being scheduled to play more than 20 straight days. If the Dodgers are forced to make a return trip, theyll probably have Clayton Kershaw with them. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, who has been on the disabled list for the first time in his career with a back muscle injury since winning the teams season opener, will make his second minor league rehabilitation start on Wednesday for Double-A Chattanooga, the Dodgers announced on Monday. Kershaw said over the weekend he felt ready to return, but the team preferred to be cautious with their $215 million ace. Kershaw pitched five innings on Saturday for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. SAN DIEGO -- A front-office shakeup had no impact on the San Diego Padres performance. After the team announced general manager Josh Byrnes was fired minutes before the first pitch with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, the Padres put up another punchless performance in a 2-1 loss against Hyun-Jin Ryu. Although Padres President and CEO Mike Dee said there were a number of factors that figured into the firing, Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler made it clear that the ownership group was not happy with the product on the field. "When you invest 50 per cent more money over the last two years, in terms of payroll, you expect better performance," Fowler said. "We gave baseball ops a clean slate as far as who did they want, what did they want to do. For my perspective, we are standing here as a consequence of that not working." Byrnes off-season moves included free agent signings of starting pitcher Josh Johnson, who has yet to pitch for San Diego since straining his right forearm in spring training, reliever Joaquin Benoit and outfielder Seth Smith. "We were led to believe, and I think its fair to say we believed, based upon the investment that we made, the additions we made in the off-season, the addition of certain players during the off-season, that would put us over the top," Dee said. "We felt confident that we would be in a position to compete for post-season baseball." Dee added that manager Bud Black has been told that his job is safe at least through the end of the season. Until the club hires a new general manager, senior vice-president for baseball operations Omar Minaya and assistant general managers A.J. Hinch and Fred Uhlman, Jr. will assume the GM duties. Minaya was the general manager of the New York Mets from 2005-10. Byrnes was hired by the Padres as their senior vice-president for baseball operations in December 2010 after he was let go as general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he was in the middle of an eight-year deal. He was promoted 10 months later to GM and was given a five-year contract. Under Byrnes, the Padres payroll increased nearly $40 million to $89,881,696 on opening this season -- 23rd overall -- but the team has made little progress. After finishing with 76-86 records in his first two seasons, the Padres are 32-43 and 12 1/2 games back in the NL West during an injury-plagued season. Byrnes was touted by the Padres as excelling at scouting and player development, but his biggest moves came through trades. He sent first base prospect Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs for top-line starter Andrew Cashner, and he dealt starting pitcher Mat Latos for infielder Yasmani Grandal, catcher Yonder Alonso, and right-handers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger. Byrnes also acquired starter Tyson Ross, closer Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Quentin and right-hander Ian Kennedy. Ryu (9-3) had few problems against the light-hitting Padres, as he won for the sixth time in seven starts since missing more than three weeks with shoulder inflammation. The left-handed Ryu gave up one runs and four hits in six innings, and he did not allow San Diego to get its first hit until the fourth inning. The Dodgers, winners of 10 of 14, took two of three games in the series and have either won or split their last 11 series in San Diego. The last time they lost a series in San Diego was a three-game sweep in September 2010. Adrian Gonzalez and Dee Gordon drove in runs against Eric Stults (2-10). J.P. Howell pitched 1 1-3 perfect innings and Brian Wilson got two outs before Kenley Jansen finished off the four-hitter by pitching the ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances. MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impacts faltering offence could be getting a big boost this weekend. After a month watching from the sidelines, star striker Marco Di Vaio will likely dress for Montreal when the last-place Impact (1-5-4) face the Colorado Rapids (4-4-3) in Denver on Saturday. "I think Im ready to go," said Di Vaio on Wednesday before the team left for the American southwest. "I trained yesterday, alone at first and then with the team. And today I took part in the whole session. I feel good after the injury. I can go." The star striker injured his hamstring on April 19 in a 4-0 road defeat to Sporting Kansas City, leaving the game in the 56th minute. He then played in most of Montreals victory over the Philadelphia Union the following week, but has since missed the clubs last four games. "Obviously, if Marco comes back, it will help," assistant coach Mauro Biello told reporters on Wednesday. "We have a good record when hes in the lineup. Were just waiting for him to be at 100 per cent." Despite only scoring once in five appearances this season, Di Vaios return could spark a struggling club looking to build on back-to-back respectable results. Montreal played to a 1-1 draw against second-place D.C. United last Saturday three days after a midweek victory over NASL side FC Edmonton in the Amway Canadian Championship. "The confidence is growing," Impact defender Jeb Brovsky told the teams website. "As a team, the chemistry is going up. This team is going in the right direction. It takes only two or three games to really change things around in a season. We have a tough road game. Its time to see what were made of." With seven points from 10 games, the MLS-worst Impact are looking to climb from the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. The team has only scored three goals in its last five MLS games. Two of those were courtesy of striker Jack McInerney, who has now scored five times in all competitions since joining the Impact in April. And while the combination of McInerney and Di Vaio up front in a two-striker formation has yet to click for Montreal, the team is hoping the two connect for goals on Saturday. "Were happy that Jack is scoring goals, and that Marco is coming back," said Biello. "We have to keep working on that chemistry up front. With players like that, we can give a lot of trouble to our opponents." Montreal will hope to trouble a Colorado side going through struggles of its own. The team has only scored four goals in its last six games, and is coming off consecutive losses for the first time this season. Last week, defender Drew Moor scored his first goal of the season late in the game, a consolation prize in a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake. While Di Vaio may be returning to the Impact lineup, the Rapids will still be without top-scorer Vicente Sanchez, who sprained his knee in a May 3 win. Sanchez has scored five goals this season -- four of those from the penalty spot. "(The Rapids) have a few injuries," said Biello. "But they have a lot of speed up front and a lot of quality in the midfield. Were expecting a team thats looking for a victory, especially at home. They lost their last home game. We have to be ready for a team that will push and pressure us." The Impact will also have to cope with high altitude. Denver is nicknamed the Mile-High City because, at one mile above sea level, it is one of the most elevated cities in the United States. For Montreal, it will mean a risk of dehydration and altitude sickness. "The altitude is definitely an issue," said Denver-born Brovsky. "We are a fit team, so that should help. But well have to make sure that we arent running around aimlessly." Excited to be going back to his home city, Brovsky promised to fill a section of Dicks Sporting Goods Park with Impact supporters. "I already made a lot of calls, and a lot of people are amped up," he said. "So hopefully we have a home atmosphere in Colorado. Hopefully theyll be pretty rowdy -- which I know my family are." Notes: Newcomer midfielder Issey Nakajima-Farran could make his Impact debut against the Rapids. The Canadian international was acquired by Montreal last week from Toronto FC. a The Impact have lost both their games against the Rapids since joining MLS. a Marc Burch (hamstring) and Nathan Sturgis (foot) are both doubtful for the Rapids. a The Impact and Rapids wont meet again this season. 14:34ET 23-05-14 Minkah Fitzpatrick Jersey .J. -- Travis Zajac of the New Jersey Devils took a lot of grief considering his scored the first of his career-best three goals just 12 seconds into a crucial game against the Florida Panthers. Angus Reid is at peace with the most difficult football decision hes ever had to make. The B.C. Lions veteran centre announced his retirement Friday, ending a 13-year CFL career. "As an athlete you know this day will always come but you never want to think about it and never want to know its real so youre forced with facing that reality," Reid said. "But Im good with it because it was my decision and most athletes dont get that opportunity, their careers end because of various factors out of their control. "Sure, in the youthful part of my mind Id love to play football forever but I know I cant give the game what Id want to give it in terms of what I have left physically and I wouldnt be happy with that. I have nothing but happy memories and theres nothing more I couldve achieved. I think I over-achieved and Im proud of what I was able to get done in this sport." The six-foot-one, 305-pound Reid appeared in over 200 regular-season games, 11 playoff contests and three Grey Cups with the Lions (winning two). Heady stuff indeed, considering the inauspicious start to his pro career. The 37-year-old native of Richmond, B.C., was selected fourth overall in the 01 CFL draft by the Toronto Argonauts. However, the former Simon Fraser star was released during training camp and spent time on the Montreal Alouettes practice roster before being dealt to B.C. later that year. "I vividly remember that first year after getting home to the Lions saying, Wow, I guess this is probably it. Im a journeyman after one season. This is not what I planned," Reid said. "But true to my character and who I am I just sort of kept focusing on what I could do, kept working and didnt let what was happening dictate what I was going to do. "I think Im a pretty good example that continuous hard work does pay off. Life is going to be up and down and its going to be a bumpy road but you just have to stay on that roller-coaster longer because most of us want to get off when it gets rough. I just stayed on and it worked out well." Reid was a West Division all-star on three occasions and he earned league honours in 2011. He was also actively involved in community events. "Few players have made the kind of impression both on and off the field as a member of the B.C. Lions that Angus has during his career," Lions general manager Wally Buono said in a statement. "He was an incredibly durable player, a tremendous leader in our dressing room and he will be missed by everyone in our organization." Former CFL players Doug Brown and Bryan Chiu took to Twitter to offer their congratulations to Reid. "Throughout college & the pros, there arent many Ive lined up against that I respected more," tweeted Brown, a native of New Westminster, B.C., who was a standout defensive tackle with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. "Congrats on ur retirement." Added Chiu, a Vancouver native who played centre for the Montreal Alouetttes: "Congrats on a great career.dddddddddddd. Proud of you bro. Who wouldve thought we would both be centers in the CFL back at @vcrfootball." But Reid definitely saw the signs it was time to retire, most notably missing last season after undergoing major back surgery. "That was a wakeup call to me saying Im 37 now, not 27," Reid said. "Theres going to be life after football whether you like it or not and you want to be as healthy as you can so you can do other things in life and still have a lot of enjoyment and fun. "I have a wife and were trying to start a family and you have to look forward to more things." And then there was the realization that many of Reids former Lions teammates had long since moved on. "Half the guys I played with are my coaches now and you look around and say, Did I not get the memo," Reid said with a chuckle. "The good thing is I have no regrets looking back. "Im not leaving anything on the table. In that regard I dont want to say it was an easier decision but it gives me comfort that I can leave looking back with really proud, happy memories of my time in this sport." Especially with the majority of those memories having come at home. "There was some luck involved, obviously, that I got to play my career in B.C.," he said. "I grew up going to Lions games, my brother, Mark, was a long-snapper with the Lions in 1990 so I looked at it as a kid thinking, This would be amazing to do. "Well, I actually got to do it in the stadium I grew up going to watch games in. You really couldnt write a better career in terms of happiness, to be able to do it with your parents and family being able to come to almost every single game. You dream of a career like that and no matter how good it is it often doesnt come as close to what you would envision as a youth but mine really did and Im thankful and proud of that." As for what lies ahead, all Reid knows for sure is he wont be suiting up for the Lions in 2014. "Thats a good question, thats what Im trying to figure out right now," he said. "I did a pretty good job during my career of building bridges and good networks of people and so I do have a lot of opportunities. "However, Im trying to be careful to not to rush into the first opportunity, Im trying to look at them all." Reid has thought about a few different options when it comes to his future. "Id love to stay involved in the sport in some way but the probability of being a coach is slim right now," he said. "I think Id like to stay involved maybe in the sports media, be it TV, radio, newspapers. "But I have a feeling Ill also be doing other things in the business community. Im a Vancouver guy, this is where Ill be. Ill be busy, probably busier than I was when I played and went to work every day, put on sweats and ran around for a few hours. Now Ill probably be all over the place." Jerseys NFL Cheap China NFL Hoodies Wholesale Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Wholesale Cheap NFL Hoodies ' ' '

JEREZ, Spain -- Red Bulls frustrating start to the Formula One calendar came to a sputtering halt as car problems forced it out of the opening test session early. Daniel Ricciardo managed just seven laps around Jerez Circuit before pulling out of the afternoon session to focus on getting the RB10 ready for the next preseason test in Bahrain. Red Bull says "a mechanical issue" was discovered that could not be fixed in time for the afternoon session. Team principal Christian Horner says "its been a very difficult test. LONDON -- Queens Park Rangers secured an immediate return to the Premier League -- and a promotion windfall of at least 80 million pounds ($135 million) -- by beating Derby 1-0 in the League Championship playoff final on Saturday thanks to a last-minute goal by Bobby Zamora. QPR played the final 31 minutes with 10 men following Gary ONeils straight red card for a cynical last-man foul but in a rare foray forward, Harry Redknapps team grabbed the winner when Zamora pounced on a poor defensive clearance and sidefooted home a finish. It was QPRs only shot on target in the entire match at Wembley Stadium -- and Zamoras second winning goal in a playoff final, replicating his exploits for West Ham against Preston in 2005. "I would be a liar if I said I thought I would see us scoring," Redknapp said. "They had 11 men, were probing us and we were hanging on. "That was a one-off, where you stand on the touchline, hang on for grim death and get a goal like that." The match is the most lucrative in world football due to the money clubs earn from being in the Premier League because of the divisions huge domestic and global broadcasting deals. QPR, which is promoted along with Leicester and Burnley, had finished fourth in the regular season -- a place below Derby -- in its first year back in the second tier. It proved to be another bad day at Wembley for Derby manager Steve McClaren, whose last match as a coach at the national stadium was with England in the teams 3-2 loss to Croatia in November 2007. That ensured England missed out on qualification for the 2008 European Championships and he was fired the next day. "It was the cruellest game ever," McClaren said. "Ive lost some games in my career but that is the cruellest. We didnt deserve that, but you dont often get what you deserve." Derby was looking to get back in the Premier League after a six-year absence and piled on the pressure in the final half-hour after ONeil departed for clipping the heels of Johnny Russell as the midfielder ran through on goal. QPR defended stoically, with centre back Richard Dunne in commanding form and former England goalkeeper Rob Green saving a slew of shots, and the match appeared to be heading for extra time. However, the late twist came when Derby defender Richard Keogh miscued a clearance from Junior Hoiletts cross and Zamora applied a fine left-footed finish. Keogh was in tears after the final whistle. QPR is owned by Tony Fernandes, a Malaysian entrepreneur who is the chief executive of AirAsia and the team principal of Caterham in Formula One. He has invested heavily in the London team since becoming its majority shareholder in 2011, with QPR posting debts of 65.4 million pounds for the financial year in March. Jerome Baker Jersey . You might as well change the franchise name from the Blue Jays to the "Thunder Birds." The Jays have scored 56 runs in putting together a 6-2 record, good for an average of seven runs per game. Over the last couple of weeks, everyone has been talking about the firepower of the Colorado Rockies and rightly so, but the Rockies have scored 58 runs over the same span in May and have an identical 6-2 mark. Granted, the Rockies dont play with a DH for the bulk of their games, so their totals are slightly more impressiveThe Jays pitching numbers have improved this month, as well. They have given up just 31 runs or just fewer than four per game. Colorado has surrendered exactly 32 or four runs per game right on the button. On the season, the Jays have scored 178 runs and given up 158. That 178 total is second in the American League to the Chicago White Sox who have racked up 184, which is, coincidentally, the same number they have allowed. The 178 the Jays have scored is the best in the AL East, but the 158 against is fourth-worst in the American League, ahead of only the Texas Rangers (174), Houston Astros (181) and the White Sox. The Jays though have improved by leaps and bounds over a year ago when they were 13-23 out of the gate. At this point last season, the Jays had only scored 139 runs and had given up 190. The -51 run differential was second-worst in the American League to Houston at -73. The really interesting comparison takes us back to 1993, the last time the Blue Jays won the World Series. The season started a week later so it took the 93 Jays until May 14 to play their 35th game, but guess what - their record then was exactly the same as this years edition at 18-17. On that date the 93 Jays had scored, you guessed it, 178 runs, the same as this years team. The 93 bunch though had allowed a dreadful 193 runs through May 14 for a -15 run differential. Im not saying the 2014 Blue Jays are as good a team as the 93 Jays, because at this point that would be ludicrous. Remember that the 93 Jays added Tony Fernandez and Rickey Henderson to the mix with in-season deals and became even stronger and the 1993 edition also had a lights-out closer in Duane Ward. Still, the numbers of the current team are intriguing and give cause for some hope. Another point - the Blue Jays have won a season high five-straight, which, while impressive, can only be considered a starting point. The 93 Jays had three outstanding runs in-season, From May 20 through June 5, they won 13 of 16 games. Then, from June 15 through the 29, they took 12 of 14 to push their record to 48-30. After losing 10 of 11 from June 30 to July 11 to fall to 49-40, they rebounded to take nine of 10 from July 24 through August 3. Next came a nine-game win streak from September 10 through 21 and then they finished the season by winning five of their final seven. The Jays finished the 1993 regular season with a 95-67 record, one victory fewer than the previous years team.ddddddddddddThey scored 847 runs, second-best in the American League and gave up 742, which was fifth in the American League. Their run differential was +105. On last May 9, the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox were in a virtual tie for first in the AL East. Tampa Bay was 16-18, four-and-a-half games out. The Blue Jays were dead last at 13-23, eight-and-a-half games out. On May 9, this time around, the Jays are alone in third place in the East, one game back of the Yankees and one-and-a-half behind first-place Baltimore. Its still a very long, difficult haul, but this summer may not be as long as many of us thought it would be. - We dont get to see enough of Colorado to truly appreciate the talents of their young third baseman Nolan Arenado. On Thursday, he broke Michael Cuddyers club record 27-game hit streak that was set only last season. At 28 games, Arenado is exactly halfway to Joe DiMaggios iconic 56-game streak set in 1941. If Arenado stays healthy and can put together one of those streaks for the ages, he would be in position to equal and then surpass DiMaggios streak June 10 and 11 at home against the Atlanta Braves at Coors Field. Realistically, though, in this day and age, its hard to see anyone coming close to that milestone. - The Blue Jays lost outfielder Moises Sierra on a waiver claim to the White Sox last weekend. He was added to Chicagos roster last Sunday and made late-inning appearances in that game against the Cleveland Indians and in Mondays cross-city rivalry game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, going hitless in one at-bat for the two games. On Tuesday, though, Adam Dunn was a late scratch and skipper Robin Ventura stuck Sierra in the line-up in right field. He went four-for-four and scored a run in the White Sox 5-1 victory over the Cubbies. It will be interesting to see how his career unfolds with this fresh start. - Two of this years early season hard-luck pitchers faced each other earlier this week at Wrigley. Jose Quintana of the White Sox pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, giving up just one run, while racking up his fourth no-decision in starts. This coming from the guy who set an American League record a year ago with 17 no-decisions. Quintana is 1-2 on the campaign with a 3.56 ERA. On the flip side, the Cubs Jeff Samardzija, whos in his contract year, fired nine innings of three-hit, one-run ball before being taken out. Again, a no decision. Samardizija, whos pitched like an All-Star and has been the subject of many a trade rumour is 0-3 with an incredible 1.62 earned run average. Ultimately, he probably will be traded to a contender, maybe even the Jays, but not until a lot closer to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. And, yes, the White Sox did win that game at Wrigley 3-1 over the Cubs in 12 innings. SOUTHPORT, England -- Mo Martin knew she hit her 3-wood exactly how she wanted on the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale. With the ball slightly below her feet, just under 240 yards away and a strong wind at her back, she let it rip and watched the ball track toward the flag. Martin thought it was short. Then she thought it might be too long. Moments later, she realized just how good it was. "I could hear it hit the pin from the fairway," Martin said. "That was a pretty fun feeling." The ball rolled into the centre of the flagstick and settled 6 feet away for an eagle, and when no one could catch her, the 31-year-old American became a major champion Sunday at the Ricoh Womens British Open. "I think I still need to be pinched," Martin said after closing with an even-par 72 for a one-shot victory over Shanshan Feng of China and Suzann Pettersen of Norway. It was Martins first eagle of the year -- one of the shortest hitters in the game, she doesnt get many opportunities. She had not won on the LPGA Tour in 63 previous tries. And on a wind-swept Sunday when no one broke par, she was never closer than two shots of the leaders the entire final round. The best shot of her life changed everything. "An absolutely perfect 3-wood," she said. "When it was in the air, I said, Sit. And then I said, Stop. And then when it was going toward the hole, I said, OK, I dont have anything more to say to that ball. I actually heard it hit the pin. Its definitely one to remember." She turned and did a little jig in the fairway. An hour later, it turned out to be the winning shot when Feng and Inbee Park of South Korea couldnt stay under par. Both needed one birdie over the two par-5 closing holes at Royal Birkdale. Feng missed birdie putts of 15 and 10 feet and shot 75. Park missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th, and then put her tee shot in the right rough on the easy 18th hole and wound up with a bogey for a 77. Martin, who finished at 1-under 287, was on the practice range preparing for a playoff that never happened when she hugged her caddie, Kyle Morrison. "Is this real life?" she said. It seemed like a fairy tale for Martin. Growing up with modest means, her father built a cage in their driveway for her to practice hitting balls. She walked on at UCLA. She needed financial help to keep her dream alive, including the six years it took just to reach the LPGA Tour. Martin said she would keep trying if she woke up happy, felt she was still contributing something to womens golf and could pay her bills. And here she is -- Mighty Mo, never happier. When she returned from the range, players gathered around her cart to celebrate with a champagne shower. "Its still soaking in, along with champagne in my jacket," Martin said. "This is just unbelievable. Its literally a dream come true." It was a disappointment for Park, trying to become the seventh woman to capture four of the LPGAs major. She had a two-shot lead at the turn until the high grass grabbed the bottom of her wedge on the 10th, sending her to a double bogey. She fell out of the lead by going long on the 14th for bogey, and never caught up. "Made a lot of mistakes that I really didnt need to make," Park said. "Obviously the last hole drive was really disappointing." Pettersen finished birdie-birdie that allowed her to share second place, but not enough to atone for a pair of double bogeys earlier in the round. Martin earned $474,575 -- she had $599,760 in career money when she arrived in England. Americans now have won the first three majors of the LPGA Tour season for the first time since 1999, with Martin following Lexi Thompson at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and Michelle Wie at the U.S. Womens Open. A more likely candidate to extend that streak at Royal Birkdale would have been Stacy Lewis, the defending champion, who also started only three shots behind. Lewis didnt make a birdie until the 18th hole and closed with a 78. Wie missed the cut, and Thompson finished 15 shots out of the lead. Martin had a three-shot lead going into the weekend, building her strategy of keeping the ball in the fairway. But she had a 77 in the third round, and that figured to be the end of her chances. After two bogeys in five holes to start the final round, she was solid the rest of the way. And then she was simply spectacular at the end. "Safe to say its the best week of my life," she said. Both times hes left empty. It was War Emblem in 2002. On Saturday, it was California Chromes turn to lose the Belmont after capturing the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. "We reached almost to the top," Espinoza said. "Just one step away to get to the top." California Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth, a disappointment to bettors who made him the 4-5 favourite. The Belmont was the third tough race in a short five-week span. His tank was empty. "As soon as he came out of the gate he wasnt the same," Espinoza said. Espinoza, 41, was once a bus driver in his native Mexico City. He has won riding titles at four Southern California tracks, winning over 3,000 races and earning $169 million in purses. With history on the line, the rider did his best to nurse California Chrome through the 1 1/2-mile race. Espinoza kept him on the rail in the early stages. On the final turn, with time running out, Espinoza shifted California Chrome outside to light a spark. "By five eighths pole (the top of the turn) he was empty," the jockey said. "I tried to move out to see if iit would make a difference.dddddddddddd." Not with a tired horse. "I was just waiting for to have the same kick like he always had before," Espinoza said. "Today he was a bit flat down the lane. He ran back-to-back races at different tracks, and against those fresh horses." At least this time, California Chrome got to run his race. War Emblem was a different kind of horse, a confirmed front runner who had to have it his way to be effective. War Emblem stumbled at the start of the Belmont. Espinoza got him back into the race but playing catchup was not War Emblems game. He finished eighth. Jockeys rarely get a chance for Triple Crown redemption. Espinoza was handed one when California Chrome launched a six-race winning streak the moment they teamed up. It was a magical run that started in races restricted to horses bred in California. It picked up momentum in the Santa Anita Derby and crashed the national stage in the Derby and the Preakness. In every win, California Chrome proved responsive to every command by Espinoza. They won on the lead. They came from just off the pace. "The last time I had been here, I stumbled," Espinoza said. "Today I dont feel bad. California Chrome was just empty today." TORONTO – Jose Bautista returned to the Blue Jays starting lineup, as the designated hitter, on Tuesday afternoon. He made his presence felt at first opportunity, hitting a home run to left-centre field in the first inning. The homer was Bautistas first since June 6, a span of 17 games. The slugger wasnt yet ready to resume playing defence. "I think the decision was made by Gibby to give me one or two days to kind of ease back into it," said Bautista. "Depending on how I feel tomorrow, possibly playing right field. If not, definitely in Oakland sometime." Bautistas bat is a welcome sight. However, because he couldnt play right field, manager John Gibbons was forced to send Adam Lind to the bench. The Blue Jays usually employ a first base-designated hitter combination of Lind and Edwin Encarnacion when an opponent starts a right-handed pitcher. Encarnacion started at first base on Tuesday. Baseballs leader with 59 walks and a .432 on-base percentage, Bautista did not take issue with Gibbons decision to keep him out of right field for at least one more day. "I want to play today and Im consciously not going to fight my manager because what hes doing I think is reasonable," said Bautista. "Same thing tomorrow. But if I feel well then theres no restrictions. Its not if I want to play and Im going to make it worse; I think Im old enough and disciplined enough to not risk making it worse by playing defence too soon." The Blue Jays went 3-4 in Bautistas absence from the starting lineup, including three-straight losses to the Chicago White Sox in games started by a left-handed pitcher. Toronto is scheduled to face three left-handers during its four-game set in Oakland, which starts on Thursday evening. The club could face two more southpaws next week in its three-game series in Anaheim. Kenny Young Jersey .7 million, one-year contract, a raise of $2.2 million. That is, until he decided he needed a night off. Saying he was erring on the side of caution, the nine-time All-Star announced about an hour before game time that he would not be playing when the Heat faced the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. Wade was in coach Erik Spoelstras original lineup. "He wants me to do whats best for my body," Wade said. "Ive been practicing very hard, going very hard. I could play, but I just think its smarter that in consecutive days of going so hard, just be smart today, rest a little bit, let my legs recover." The Heat went on to beat the Hawks 92-87, with Chris Bosh scoring 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting to lead the way for the two-time defending NBA champions. LeBron James, the leagues four-time MVP, finished with nine points, five assists and five rebounds for Miami. Wade dealt with an array of problems in the final months of last season, mainly a bone bruise and tendinitis in his right knee. He also had to have his left knee drained before playing in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Mondays decision, he said, was done solely with maintenance in mind. Wade played in the teams scrimmage on Sunday night and worked out again in the morning before the exhibition opener. "Ive worked so hard and Im still working hard," Wade said. "When you put work in you want to see some results, so coming to training camp and seeing the results of the work Ive put in, working with Tim (Grover, his longtime trainer) all summer, that part was good. But outside of that, its a long season annd I want to stay healthy for the majority of the season and the playoffs.dddddddddddd Ive got a bigger picture in mind." Wade also said he was thinking about the preseason opener in 2010, the ballyhooed first time that he, James and Bosh were teammates in a Heat uniform. Wade said he felt some hamstring tightness before that game, and three minutes after tip-off, he left after popping that muscle a bit -- an injury that slowed him for the remainder of the preseason. "I do have that in mind, so Im taking it a little smarter than before," Wade said. Spoelstra has raved several times since camp opened about Wades current level of fitness, and James said Monday that Wade has been one of the most impressive players in his mind since the team started its formal workouts this season. James said the last time he saw Wade this good physically was in the teams 2010 training camp. "Seeing his explosiveness, his quickness, lateral quickness, everything, he looks healthy, feels healthy and he shows it more than anything on his face when hes healthy," James said. "Thats a great sign." James Jones replaced Wade in the starting lineup and finished with six points in 20 minutes. Wade said he will practice on Tuesday and may play Thursday when Miami resumes its post-season slate at Detroit. The Heat also were without Greg Oden, Michael Beasley, Chris Andersen and Udonis Haslem for the preseason opener, all out with a variety of injuries that are largely considered minor. "They all say they are ready to go," Spoelstra said. "We want to manage it."
