TORONTO -- Some call it the Ed-wing. Others describe it as taking the parrot for a walk. When Edwin Encarnacion rounds first base on his home run trot, he raises his right arm slightly and sticks out his elbow. It has become a very familiar sight during the Blue Jays season-high eight-game winning streak. The Toronto slugger homered for the third straight game as the Blue Jays outscored the Tampa Bay Rays 9-6 on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. Encarnacion hit one of three Toronto homers and starter Mark Buehrle picked up his major league-leading ninth victory for the American League East division leaders. Encarnacion, who has hit 14 of his 16 homers in May, also tied Jose Bautistas club record for most homers in a month set back in June 2012. "You cant describe it," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "Ive been seeing that parrot a lot, thats for sure." Adam Lind and Juan Francisco also went deep for the Blue Jays, who outhit the Rays 13-12. Toronto has won 13 of its last 15 games and 18 of 23. "Theyre no fun right now," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "Everything theyve got going on right now seems to be working." Buehrle (9-1), meanwhile, allowed eight hits and three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. He wasnt as sharp as previous starts but kept the damage to a minimum. Lind and Encarnacion hit back-to-back shots in Torontos four-run fifth inning. "Everybodys having fun," Encarnacion said. "You can see it on their faces. Were playing great baseball when were on the field. So I think thats the No. 1 thing weve been doing. "Playing great baseball, playing the best baseball and enjoying it, enjoying the game." Linds homer was a two-run blast and Encarnacion followed with a monster shot that landed just above the second deck inside the left-field foul pole. Francisco added a solo shot in the seventh and Casey Janssen worked the ninth inning for his eighth save as Tampa Bay (23-30) lost its second straight game. Toronto (31-22) will go for the sweep of the three-game series on Wednesday night. "Just this offence and the way the guys are swinging the bat, it seems like the pitching - everything is coming together," Buehrle said. Both Buehrle and Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb (1-2) were quick and efficient over the first three innings. The Rays scored a pair in the top half of the fourth and the Jays answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half. Toronto went to work in the fifth after Jose Reyes lashed a ball back to the mound that hit Cobb on his right side near the waist. Cobb stayed in but struggled through the rest of the frame, giving up an RBI single to Bautista before the back-to-back homers. "Id love to blame it on something but honestly it was really good hitters hitting good pitches," Cobb said. The Blue Jays tacked on two more runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. "It was one of those games that didnt feel good even until the end," Gibbons said. "We opened up the lead a little bit and then they tacked on a few runs to pull to within three. It definitely wasnt a comfortable game. "But when you fall behind, I mean were confident right now. Were really confident." Buehrle, who received a standing ovation after he was pulled, walked a batter and struck out three. Cobb allowed nine hits, six earned runs and a walk over five innings while striking out seven. His earned-run average jumped from 1.40 to 2.93. "I thought Cobb had really good stuff tonight, not pedestrian by any means," Maddon said. "He was really good, moving along really nicely and all of a sudden they struck." Notes: Announced attendance was 15,993 and the game took three hours to play. ... It was the fourth time this season that the Blue Jays have hit back-to-back home runs. Lind has three homers on the season while Francisco has nine. ... Toronto has hit at least one homer in 10 straight games. ... The Blue Jays longest winning streak before this was an 11-gamer last June. ... Gibbons challenged a call in the third inning when first-base umpire ruled that Yunel Escobar was safe. After a review of just 40 seconds, the call was overturned and Escobar was ruled out, making it a 4-6-3 double play. ... Navarro showed his mettle in the third inning. He was struck on his catching hand by Jose Molinas bat on an awkward follow-through and then took a foul tip to his right arm later in the at-bat. He said he bruised a finger and expects to play the series finale. ... Liam Hendriks (1-0) is scheduled to start Wednesday against Tampa Bays Chris Archer (3-2). ... The Blue Jays will complete the 10-game homestand later this week with a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. Custom Minnesota Wild Jerseys .com) - Nate Buss 3-pointer with 5. When the Canadian womens rugby team won the Nations Cup shortly after he took over the program last year, head coach Francois Ratier held a post-tournament meeting with his players. He asked them what they wanted the teams identity to be and the players had the answers he was looking for. Ratier then chipped in himself by writing down the number of days left until the IRB Womens Rugby World Cup final. "What can we do every day to make it happen?" he recalled asking his players. "And now, we are here." Ratier was dreaming big at the time. Canada had never even reached the podium -- never mind the championship game -- in the six previous editions of the tournament. Now his team has a shot to win it all on Sunday against England at Stade Jean-Bouin in Paris. "We have the passion, we have the rage, we want it," Ratier said. "But then we just have to execute and do it." It has been an impressive run by the Canadians, who have finished fourth on three occasions and were coming off a sixth-place showing in 2010. England, meanwhile, is a 2010 runner-up and has never finished lower than third, winning it all in 1994. The 2014 Canadian squad has surpassed expectations and theyve done it by grinding down the opposition. Canada opened the tournament with comfortable wins over Spain and Samoa before fighting England to a 13-13 draw. Next up was an impressive 18-16 victory over France in front of a sellout crowd that nearly boosted the host side to a comeback win. The Canadians held strong though, with Magali Harveys try standing up as the difference. The Canadian team is a tough, united side that believes it belongs in the mix with the worlds best. Canada has proved that by playing a fast, physical brand of rugby and using a team-first mentality. It takes Ratier back to that meeting a year ago after Canadas 27-13 win over England to win the Nations Cup for the first time. It was a victory that he said started the players on their current journey. He still remembers the terms the players used to describe the teams identity. "They came back with really simple words," he said. "One of them was Fearless. Which is great, because thats what they are." Canada also defeated England 29-25 earlier in that tournament in Denver. England got some revenge a few months later by easily dismantling Canada 32-3 at The Twickenham Stoop in the final game of Canadas European tour. Harvey and captain Kelly Russell, both recently shortlisted for the womens player of the year award, have continued their strong play in France. Both have been leaders for the Canadian side. "Weve put in the work, so were happy to be where we are," Russell said of her squad. "We have one more goal to achieve here and thats winning it." England lost to New Zealand in the last three finals, but the Black Ferns failed to advance from the pool stage this year. "Its a cliche, but we really have taken it one game at a time," said England coach Gary Street. "If you had said to us at the start of the tournament that we would have the opportunity to play France or Canada in the final then of course, we would have taken it. Were massively looking forward to (the final)." England advanced with a 40-7 rout of Ireland, who will play France in the third-place game before the final. A packed house is expected and with Frances archrival providing the opposition in the championship game, there should be plenty of local support for Canada this time around. "We are not nervous," Ratier said. "We just trust ourselves and were going to play our best rugby. Well see it at the end if its a win or a loss. "But for sure were going to leave everything on the field." As each game passes (each has played close with the exception of last night) it becomes clearer just how evenly matched these two teams are and how one mistake, or one bad inning, is likely to sway the result. Christian Jones Jersey . In taking its goal tally to 99 in all competitions already this season, City delivered another demonstration of its lethal firepower at Etihad Stadium to set up a fourth-round match at home to another second-tier team -- Watford.MONTREAL -- It looked like it would be easy when Rene Bourque scored for the Montreal Canadiens only 11 seconds into the game. But the Canadiens needed a third-period goal from Tomas Plekanec and some fine saves from Carey Price to down the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Sunday night and take a choke hold on their NHL Eastern Conference playoff series. The victory gave Montreal a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven set with a chance to sweep the Bolts on home ice in Game 4 on Tuesday night. "Weve seen many scenarios in the playoffs and we have to have the same approach for the next game as we had for the last three," said Montreal defenceman P.K. Subban, who had a pair of assists in a standout performance. "Theyre a good team. "They had a lot of opportunities to score. They fought their way back into the game. They put pucks on the net and came hard to the end. We know theyll fight until the final buzzer, so we have to be ready next game." Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal while Ondrej Palat, back after missing a game with an injury, and defenceman Matthew Carle replied for Tampa Bay. Montreal outshot the Lightning 31-29, but there were nervy moments and a disputed, disallowed goal as the visitors pushed back in the second and third frames. "We were determined, we played with passion, I thought we responded unreal," said Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper. "Its tough to walk into that locker-room and look those guys in the eye. "Clearly, that was the best game weve played in this series. I though they deserved a better fate. Ultimately, its a loss and thats what hurts the most." The Canadiens have a chance to avenge their only previous playoff meeting with the Lightning, who swept them in 2004 before going on to win the Stanley Cup. After winning the first two games in Tampa, Fla., the Canadiens returned to a rousing welcome from their fans and a spectacular pre-game show. The crowd of 21,273 was still roaring after joining old-time Quebec pop singer Ginette Reno in the Canadian anthem when Subban bounced a pass up the middle of the ice and Bourque collected it behind the Lightning defence. The unexpected scoring hero put his third of the series past Anders Lindback at the 11-second mark -- and the noise got even louder. "I didnt really know who (Reno) was, but by the reaction I knew it was somebody popular," said Bourque. "She did a great job getting the fans fired up. "We didnt plan it at all. It was a lucky bounce." Lindback made up for it with some strong saves as the Lightning cancelled the Canadiens early emotion by killing off a four-minute high-sticking call on rearguard Mike Barberio. Palat tied it 8:39 into the second frame as he buried the ricochet of a Steven Stamkos shot off Mike Weavers skate on the Bolts first powerr play.dddddddddddd Then the Lightning poured it on, and looked like they had the go-ahead goal, only to see Subban bat a flying puck out of the air behind Price. Seconds later, Ryan Callahan put the puck in at 15:38 only to see it waived off due to what was ruled as incidental contact on Price by Alex Killorn. The Bolts felt the goal was good. "I was (angry) then and Im (angry) now," said Cooper. "Thats just my opinion. Ill let the court of public opinion take care of the rest." Of course, the Canadiens thought the officials got the call right. "It was a pass across, it got deflected in the air," said Price. "Subban batted it out of the air and it wound up kind of a scramble. "I tried to come back across the net and tripped over their guy, who was right in the middle of the crease. At that point, I didnt know what was going on." Less than three minutes later, the teams were each down a man when Subban picked up the puck, skated through the defence and around the net to set up Gallagher for his second goal of the series at 18:10. "I just tried to create space," said Subban, who had a team-high 28:03 of ice time. "I took a penalty earlier in the period and I felt good when I came back on the ice and the guys had killed it off. "Larry (Lars Eller) made a great play behind the net to move it to open ice. I tried to draw the forechecker to me and see what happened. I went behind the net. Gally did a great job to get himself open. It makes it easy for me to get it to him." Plekanec scored what would be the game-winner when he threaded a shot through from the right circle 5:43 into the third period. But Carle made it close with a point shot that looked to deflect off a body in front at 11:36. The Canadiens held off a late charge to put the win away. The lightning got a scare at 16:09 of the second when Stamkos fell after jostling with Brandon Prust and got hit in the head by Alexei Emelins knee. But the Bolts scoring star was able to return for the third period and picked up his second assist of the night on Carles goal. Cooper made four lineup changes, bringing in forwards Palat, Tom Pyatt and B.J. Crombeen and defenceman Barberio and scratching Sami Salo, Michael Kostka, Richard Panik and Nikita Kucherov. Salo reportedly has an upper body injury. Montreal made no changes. Notes: The Canadiens called up a taxi squad from AHL Hamilton, including goalies Dustin Tokarski and Devan Dubnyk, defencemen Nathan Beaulieu, Davis Drewiske and Greg Pateryn and forwards Sven Andrighetto, Mike Blundin, Gabriel Dumont, Louis Leblanc and Christian Thomas. . . Bourques goal was not a team record for fastest to start a game. Bo Gainey scored seven seconds into a playoff game in 1977. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rick Porcello went to his normal spot on the Detroit Tigers bench after the eighth inning. He had every intention to finish what he started. With a few pitches to spare, Porcello got his first career shutout, a 6-0 three-hitter over the sinking Texas Rangers on Thursday night for Detroits seventh consecutive victory. "This is extremely special to me," Porcello said. Porcello (10-4) threw 105 pitches through eight innings. With relievers moving around in the bullpen, manager Brad Ausmus and pitching coach Jeff Jones discussed what to do with the right-hander, who did his best to avoid eye contact and then needed only 10 pitches in the ninth to get three groundball outs. "You just worry about the pitch count. We dont want him going much above 115, maybe top out at 120," Ausmus said. "A 15-pitch inning is a good inning, so its kind of a tall task to ask him to get through the inning, but he was able to do it." Porcello limited the Rangers to three singles and benefited from three 4-6-3 double plays (second baseman Ian Kinsler to shortstop Eugenio Sanchez to first baseman Miguel Cabrera), including one after Texas had consecutive hits in the sixth. "The ability to get two outs with one pitch is huge. I was able to execute those sinkers," Porcello said. "Without those guys, I dont know that I would have been able to go nine." The right-hander struck out six and walked three, throwing 72 of his season-high 115 pitches for strikes. It was only the second complete game for Porcello in 164 major league starts -- all for the Tigers since 2009, and he has won at least 10 games in each of his six seasons. Miguel Cabrera had four hits and Austin Jackson hit a two-run single for the AL Central leaders, who completed a three-game sweep. While the Tigers have the longest winning streak in the majors, Texas has the longest losing streak at eight in a row. The Rangers, who last lost eight in a row in August 2005, are 1-6-1 their last eight series overall and 16-22 at home. "We know were a way better team than the way were playing right now," said shortstop Elvis Andrus, who grounded into that double play in the sixth. "Hes got a pretty good sinker. We all knew that. He made the right pitch at the right moment." Rangers rookie Nick Martinez (1-5) allowed six hits and walked five of the 18 batters he faced in 2 1-3 innings. Detroit went ahead to stay in the second when Torii Hunter drew a bases-loaded walk before Cabreras deep inning-ending flyout with the bases loaded. Victor Martinez drew a walk to start the third before a double by Nick Castellanos set up Jacksons two-run single. After two more walks, Nick Martinez was pulled and Kinsler greeted reliever Scott Baker with an RBI single that made it 4-0. Kinsler, the three-time All-Star for the Rangers who was traded to Detroit for Prince Fielder last off-season, homered in his first at-bat Tuesday in his return to Texas as an opponent. Kinsler went 6 for 14 in the series with four runs and four RBIs. With two hits in all three games, Kinsler extended his streak of multihit games to five and is hitting .302 on the season. He has 31 multihit games, one behind Houstons Jose Altuve for the most in the majors. J.D. Martinez had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers, but went 0 for 4 to snap his 14-game hitting streak that was the longest active run in the majors. Cabrera had three singles before his AL-high 28th double in the eighth drove home Kinsler. "Were playing good baseball as a team, and were confident as a group right now," Kinsler said. "Its just a lot of fun playing ball that way." NOTES: It was the fourth shutout for the Tigers this season. Texas was held scoreless for the fourth time. ... Rangers LHP Derek Holland, on the DL since off-season left knee surgery, took fielding practice off the mound. He is scheduled to throw a simulated game Saturday in Arlington. Holland said he feels great, "like I can do everything." ... Texas GM Jon Daniels said his team cant focus on all the injuries -- a major league-high 14 players on the disabled list. He said a big thing right now is player development at the big league level with the youngsters having to play. Cody Eakin Jersey . Toronto dropped a 7-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon, with only a pair of late runs preventing a second straight shutout loss. Here are 10 memorable Canadian moments from past tournaments:A GOLDEN TURN OF EVENTSThe Canadians needed a lot of help to win gold in 1990 — and they got it. Back when the format was a straight round robin, Canada had to beat Czechoslovakia and hope that Sweden could hold the Soviet Union to a tie. Canada was up 2-1 on the Czechs when the players got word that the Swedes had come back from a two-goal deficit to draw the Soviets 5-5. Both results stood and Canada brought home gold.HALISCHUKS OT HEROICSSweden tied the 2008 gold-medal game against Canada late in regulation to force overtime. The Canadians appeared to be on the ropes until Matt Halischuk stepped up in the extra period, swatting home a shot in front to give his country its fourth straight world junior title.THE PUNCH-UP AT PIESTANYA bench-clearing brawl in the final game of the 1987 tournament between Canada and the Soviet Union in Piestany, Czechoslovakia, resulted in the disqualification of both countries. Canada was up 4-2 in the second period when the melee broke out. Officials turned off the lights in the arena to try to stop the fighting that went on for 20 minutes before the game was abandoned. The Soviets had already been eliminated from medal contention, but the disqualification cost Canada at least a bronze.OWN GOAL DISASTERCanada was up 3-2 in the third period of the 2004 gold-medal game against the United States when disaster struck. After Ryan Kesler had tied it for the Americans, Canadian goalie Marc-Andre Fleury cleared a puck off a teammate and into his own net to hand the U.S. the lead and the gold medal.HAT TRICK HEROICSCanada was down 3-0 to the United States less than eight minutes into a memorable New Years Eve round-robin finale in Ottawa in 2009 when John Tavares took over. He scored goals 48 seconds apart to bring the score to 3-2 before Jordan Eberle added another a few minutes later to send the teams to the locker-rooms tied 33-3 after 20 minutes.dddddddddddd Canada would go on to win 7-4, with Tavares completing his hat trick into an empty net.SLANEY SENDS SASKATOON INTO A FRENZYCanada needed to win its final round-robin game in 1991 to claim gold on home soil. Tied 2-2 with the Soviet Union in the third, John Slaney grabbed a loose puck off the boards a ripped a shot from the point to send the crowd in Saskatoon into a frenzy and Canada to the top of the podium.DEVEREAUX SPARKS DRIVE FOR FIVECanada was down 2-1 to Russia in the semifinals at the 1997 tournament when Boyd Devereaux scored twice in the third to send his team to the final. Devereaux then opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory over the United States as Canada won its fifth straight gold medal.CANADIAN COLLAPSECanada led Russia 3-0 after two periods in the 2011 final in Buffalo, N.Y., when things went completely off the rails. Russia stunned Canada with five straight goals in the third period to win gold, a bitterly disappointing result that came a year after lost another final in overtime to the United States.TOEWS SHOOTOUT MAGICJonathan Toews introduced himself to the hockey world at the 2007 tournament. Canada and the United States were tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime in the semifinals. After the first three shooters went for each team, players were allowed shoot again. Toews scored on all three of his attempts for Canada, which eventually beat the U.S. 2-1 before downing Russia for gold.EBERLES HEROICSCanada trailed Russia 5-4 late in their 2009 semifinal in Ottawa when Jordan Eberle scored arguably the most memorable goals in tournament history. In a furious final minute of action, the puck found its way to the front to Eberle, who scored on a backhand to tie it with just 5.4 seconds to go in regulation. Overtime solved nothing, but Eberle scored the shootout winner for Canada, which would go on to thump Sweden 5-1 in the final. It marked the second time Canada had won five straight world junior titles, and is the last time the country won gold. TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays will try to capture a second straight game versus the rival New York Yankees with Mark Buehrle set to take the hill Tuesday in the middle portion of a three-game home series. With a win tonight, Buehrle will match Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka for the most wins in the majors with 11. Buehrle is 10-4 with a 2.32 earned run average, but has lost his last three starts, including a 7-3 setback at Yankee Stadium last Wednesday. Buehrle allowed three runs -- two earned -- and six hits in six innings. He has served up a home run in each of his previous three starts and hasnt fared too well in his career against New York, going 1-11 with a 5.84 ERA in 17 starts. Buehrle is 5-2 in seven starts at home this season. The Blue Jays returned home to start a nine-game stay and kicked off the residency with Mondays 8-3 victory over the Yanks. Adam Lind hit a three-run homer during a six-run second inning and finished with four RBI, while Edwin Encarnacion collected three hits. Marcus Stroman pitched well to pick up the win and limited the Yankees to a run and three hits in eight innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. "Actually getting going was fine, its the slowing down," Stroman said. Toronto is 1 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore and 2 1/2 in front on New York for the AL East lead and will also host the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers on this homestand. The Jays, who won for the second time in the last seven tries, are 21-17 as the host. The Yankees have lost three in a row since winning four straight and didnt get much help from Chase Whitley on the mound last night. Whitley was tagged for eight runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings. "I couldnt command the ball at all," Whitley said. "I couldnt execute the pitches I wanted to throw." Mark Teixeira homered for the Yankees. Taking the mound for New York Tuesday will be David Phelps. Phelps is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA and has won back-to-back outings after losing the previous four. In a 6-4 triumph over the Blue Jays last Thursday, Phelps delivered seven innings of two-run ball, struck out seven and walked two. CALGARY -- Brad Trelivings first major move as new Calgary Flames general manager was to beef up the front office. He named former Flame forward Craig Conroy and former Hockey Canada executive Brad Pascall as his new assistant general managers Friday. Conroy and Pascall join Mike Holditch, who has held that title since 2010. "Having depth, having manpower, allows us to see more and do more," Treliving said at Scotiabank Saddledome. "Everything we do here when we look at adding staff and we look at adding people, this is all about building and this is about winning. "To me, you need to build your foundation off the ice before you can ever think of having success on the ice." Treliving, 44, was revealed as the Flames new GM on April 28. The Flames were grooming Conroy for the managerial ranks before Trelivings arrival. Conroy went to work immediately as a special assistant to former GM Jay Feaster after retiring in 2011. Conroys apprenticeship accelerated in December when president of hockey operations Brian Burke fired Feaster. Conroy had more responsibilities in the four months Burke searched for a replacement before deciding on Treliving. "All of a sudden, everyone had more to do," Conroy said. "Now you can really focus in on an area and really nail down what were going to do moving forward." The 42-year-old from Potsdam, N.Y., played 1,009 NHL regular-season games, just over half of them with the Flames. He also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues. Pascall worked for Hockey Canada for almost two decades in different roles. He was most recently vice-president of hockey operations for the last four years. He was part of the management groups that assembled the victorious Canadian mens hockey teams for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. "I think the evolution of my experience of being involved with various championship teams and building an organization there from a high-performance structure, I think it was always an aspiration of mine to one day move onto the National Hockey League," Pascall said. The 43-year-old from Coquitlam, B.C., was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1990 and played four years of minor pro hockey. His wife is Cassie Campbell-Pascall, who led the Canadian womens hockey team to Olympic gold in 2002 and 2006 as team captain. Holditchs area of expertise is salary cap and contracts. Pascall will oversee Calgarys American Hockey League team which is moving to Glens Falls, N.Y., next season from Abbotsford, B.C. Conroy will spend the most time of the road of the three, Treliving said, watching NHL and minor pro games in order to help with player decisions. "I think you ought to be careful that youre not tripping over people, but the way I look at it is you get the right people on the bus, you get winners on the bus, well figure out all the rest," Treliving said. "The game is becoming bigger each day, becoming more competitive each day, so the question we ask every morning when we roll out of bed is how do we win? How do we win and how do we get better? We got better today. Well keep all three of these guys busy." Calgary missed the playoffs for a fifth straight season with a record of 35-40-7. LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool signed versatile forward Lazar Markovic from Benfica on Tuesday as the Premier League club spends the windfall from Luis Suarezs sale. Liverpool paid 12.5 million euros ($17 million) for Benficas 50 per cent share in Markovic, the Portuguese club said. Details were not disclosed about a deal to buy out the third party owning the other half of the rights in the 20-year-old Serbian. "I hope that I will fulfil the expectations of the supporters, coaches, players and all connected to the club," Markovic said. "I have seen what the players are like, I have seen what the supporters are like, and I cannot wait to start playing here." The playmaker only joined Benfica last year from Partizan Belgrade, and scored seven goals in 49 appearances as the Lisbon side won the domestic treble. Markovic is Liverpools fourth recruit in the summer transfer window, following striker Rickie Lambert and midfielders Adam Lallana and Emre Can into Anfield. Liverpool, which finished second in the Premier League last season, made around $130 million from the sale of Suarez to Barcelona last week. Kawhi Leonard Jersey . It was considered unlikely that Rielly would be loaned to Canada for the tournament, which begins Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden, though a stretch of three straight games in the press box made it something of a debate. Managers are being hired, players have been tendered contracts, options are being picked up and declined, rumors are starting and some of the lesser awards have already started to be doled out. Yes, ladies and gentleman, we are in full-fledged offseason mode. We have already uncovered our loser of the offseason and that is former Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria, who was fired last week once Joe Maddon became available. I get it Maddon is probably a better manager and if you have a chance to get him you do it, but you have to feel a little bit sorry for Renteria, who led the Cubs to 79 wins, or seven more from the previous season. The runner up to this award could be the Philadelphia Phillies, who are supposedly trying to deal first baseman Ryan Howard. I expect teams to be lining up by the droves for a shot at his services. Lets hope they have other plans this offseason in case that one doesnt come to fruition. Wouldnt you love to be a fly on the wall of those conversations with Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and other GMs? And what would an offseason be without some Alex Rodriguez drama? I hope you are all sitting down, but apparently Rodriguez was lying when he said he had no connection to Biogenesis. And get this, he may have even dabbled in some performance-enhancing drugs. I know its crazy, but I am starting to think that guy might be a little bit phony. But there will be plenty of time to discuss all that. Before the offseason really gets underway, though, theres a little business of handing out the only awards that anyone really seems to care about, those that are handed out by the Baseball Writers Association of American. So without further ado, here is how I see them going this year: AL MVP: MIKE TROUT, LA ANGELS Trout probably would have won this award in either of his first two seasons had his team made the playoffs. Trout had another spectacular season, as he hit .287 to go along with a league-best 115 runs scored, while setting career-highs with 36 home runs and 111 RBI. He also stole 16 bases in 18 attempts However, he did lead the AL with 184 strikeouts. With Derek Jeter gone, MLB needs a new face. This MVP Award will go a long way toward making Trout that guy. AL CY YOUNG: FELIX HERNANDEZ, SEATTLE It was a historic season for King Felix, as he put forth the best statistical season of his career and a new major-league record with 16 consecutive starts in which he allowed two or fewer runs in at least seven innings of work. Hernandez, who won this award in 2010, was 15-6 this season and led the league with a 2.14 ERA and a 0.915 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) over 34 starts. He was also fourth in the league with 248 strikeouts and held opponents to a league low average of .200. As we have seen in the past the key to winning these awards is how you perform in September. Well, Hernandez posted a 1.66 ERA over his final six starts. AL ROOKIE: JOSE ABREU, CHICAGO Abreu has won every rookie award this offseason and will likely add another trophy to his mantel next week. The Cuban first baseman excelled in his first year in the big leagues, as he hit .dddddddddddd317 with 35 doubles, 36 home runs, 107 RBI, a major league-best .581 slugging percentage and a .383 on-base percentage. Abreu was also the first rookie in baseball history to rank among the Top 5 in his league in each Triple Crown category and joined Hal Trosky (1934), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) as the only rookies to record 30 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBI in a season. AL MANAGER: BUCK SHOWALTER, BALTIMORE Showalter seems to win one of these Manager of the Year Awards every 10 years. He won in 1994 with the New York Yankees, then again in 2004 with the Texas Rangers. And wouldnt you know it, hes headed toward a third this year after guiding the Baltimore Orioles to their first AL East title since 1997. Should he win, he could become just the second manager to win the BBWAA award with three different organizations. Tony La Russa, a four-time winner, won with the Chicago White Sox (1983), Athletics (1988 and 1992) and the St. Louis Cardinals (2002). NL MVP: CLAYTON KERSHAW, LA DODGERS Kershaw is trying to become the first NL pitcher to win an MVP Award since Bob Gibson in 1968. In fact there hasnt even been a pitcher finish in the top-3 in MVP voting since Greg Maddux finished third in 1995. Kershaw should absolutely top Maddux and will likely join Gibson after one of the better seasons in recent memory. He was absolutely marvelous for the Dodgers this season, as he led the majors with a 21-3 record, an .875 winning percentage, a 1.77 ERA and an 0.86 WHIP. He was also second in the NL with 239 strikeouts, three behind Johnny Cueto of the Reds and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals, in 27 starts. The highlight of Kershaws season came on June 18 when he struck out 15 in a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies. NL CY YOUNG: KERSHAW Look above. While, hell likely become first player since Detroits Justin Verlander to win both awards, Kershaw will most certainly nail down his third NL Cy Young Award in four seasons. NL ROOKIE: JACOB dEGROM, NY METS Everyone knew the New York Mets had a wealth of young pitching and most thought a lot of that talent would start to come to the forefront last season. But, the pitcher who impressed the most was certainly not the one anyone would have expected. When Jacob deGrom was recalled in May the thought was he would help out of the bullpen. Injuries, though, thrust him into the rotation and he excelled, going 9-6 with a 2.69 ERA in 22 starts. While he may not have been very highly thought of at the start of last season, hell enter the 2015 campaign as part of the organizations backbone in the starting rotation, along with Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler. NL MANAGER: MATT WILLIAMS, WASHINGTON Luckily for Williams these awards are voted on before the start of the playoffs. While his Washington Nationals may have flamed out in the postseason, Williams did guide them to an NL East title with a league-best 96 wins in his first year as the teams skipper. The one knock on Williams is that he clearly walked into a terrific situation, as the talented Nationals just underperformed a year ago under Davey Johnson. But, he also had to deal with a ton of injuries throughout the season and is the only one of the three finalists to have won a division.
