KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Once the new year rolled around, Ned Yost turned his attention to the upcoming season, the new pieces that the Kansas City Royals brought in and the possibilities for new lineups. He made the prospect of a contract extension seem almost like an afterthought.I think were in great shape headed into this year, Yost said Tuesday, shortly after the club announced their managers one-year boost through the 2016 season. We came as close as you can to winning a world championship last year, he said, and when you dont do it, it leaves a taste in your mouth. Its something you strive to do, and I think everyone in that locker room will tell you they want to finish this thing off.Yost became the Royals manager in May 2010 and presided over a massive rebuilding effort that culminated with the end of a 29-year playoff drought this past season. The Royals took San Francisco to the seventh game of the World Series, leaving the tying run on third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, before their season finally ended. With most of the major pieces of that team back, combined with free-agent acquisitions such as Alex Rios, Kendrys Morales and Edinson Volquez, hopes in Kansas City are higher than ever that the long-downtrodden franchise will be able to compete for the post-season again. As we all know, baseball is a very tough business, Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. Youre always striving for organizational harmony, and we have our key leaders — in this case the manager — signed through the next two years, it helps to create that harmony. The longest-tenured manager in club history, Yost will soon become its winningest. He already has 373 victories, trailing only Dick Howser (404) and Whitey Herzog (410), and should eclipse two of the franchises iconic names by the time summer rolls around.Yosts contract was due to expire after the upcoming season, but there was little question that he would receive an extension. He has a close relationship with Moore dating to their days in the Braves organization, and Yosts ability to guide a young and unproven lineup to its first AL pennant since the Reagan administration only strengthened his organizational standing. Not everything has gone perfectly for Yost, of course. He has often been lampooned for his in-game adjustments, including a questionable decision to use starter Yordano Ventura out of the bullpen in the playoffs. And his often-surly nature, which has seemed to mellow with time, has drawn the ire of some longtime Royals fans.He came to our organization in a point in time when we needed to be re-energized, and Ned brought a lot of hope and optimism, Moore said. Those are the character traits that we believe are very important for a successful major league manager.Yost said hes been busier this off-season than ever, doing appearances and events just about every weekend since the season ended. But even as he sat in a deer stand on Tuesday, waiting for something worth shooting to amble by, his thoughts were already on the upcoming season.I go back and I look at the World Series and theres not much I would have done different, Yost said. I feel like we were in every single game. You look at the matchups we had, the situations that ended up costing us, they were all matchups we wanted. ... They just didnt work out. But you still have that taste, you know? You were that close to winning the World Series. Uchenna Nwosu Jersey . - UFC 178, previously announced for Sept. Custom Chargers Jerseys . Among the teams moves was trading one of the teams two third round picks, no. 83 overall, to the Chicago Blackhawks for Brandon Bollig, a six-foot-two, 223-pound left-winger who had seven goals, seven assists, and 92 penalty minutes in 82 games last season. "Weve talked a little bit about adding some size to our lineup," said Treliving, "I think Brandons a guy that in a situation where hes maybe given a little bit more responsibility, a little bit more opportunity, I think theres still more growth to his game. "Weve got some young people coming and we want to make sure theyre surrounded by the right people. Hes won a Stanley Cup." Chicago GM Stan Bowman said the Blackhawks would miss Bolligs presence, but that they had to look to the future. "Its always tough when you trade a player whos been part of your group, a regular player for you," said Bowman. "But weve got to look at doing some things like that to prepare for next year." Chicago needed to make some moves to get under the salary cap, which is $69 million for the 2014-2015 season. The Flames took six-foot-six right-winger Hunter Smith from the OHLs Oshawa Generals with the 54th overall pick and six-foot-one defenceman Brandon Hickey from the AJHL in round three. The teams late-round picks were Swedens Adam Ollas Mattsson, a six-foot-four 209-pound blue-liner and six-foot-three, 216-pound Austin Carroll of the WWHLs Victoria Royals.dddddddddddd "Its not about just getting big," said Treliving. "All these guys bring a little something to the table. Hunter Smith is a guy that took a huge step this year, but hes still a young guy thats going to fill out." Smith was excited to play for a Flames franchise thats putting an emphasis on physical play. "I think Calgary is a great fit for me," said Smith. "Im a big, strong power winger; Im going to get in the corners and Im going to mess it up down there." In something of a mild surprise, the Flames took the no. 2-ranked goalie, Mason McDonald of the QMJHLs Charlottetown Islanders, with the 34th overall pick, passing up no. 1-ranked Thatcher Demko. "Lot of debate on it with the guys for the last few weeks," said Treliving. "Ultimately our goalie list had Mason at the top. Our guys liked this guy, he was there, we made the pick." The six-foot-two, 170-pound Halifax native began the 2013-2014 season with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. A midseason trade moved him to Charlottetown where he finished the season with a combined eight wins, posting a 3.44 goals-against average and .900 save percentage. "We knew if we didnt take him there that we didnt have a chance to get him," said Treliving. Amateur scout Tom Webster, whos retiring after this draft, got a standing ovation before announcing the Flames final pick at no. 184. "He was emotional," said Treliving. "Thats the first time Ive seen a standing ovation on the floor for somebody. It shows the impact hes had to a lot of people out there." TORONTO - As Amir Johnson took a seat, having just picked up his sixth foul towards the end of Thursdays first overtime period, Patrick Patterson fouling out minutes earlier, Dwane Casey and his coaching staff mulled over their next move. Huddling up, Casey consulted with his assistants for over 30 seconds before looking to the far side of his bench and reluctantly calling for Jonas Valanciunas. The Raptors starting centre had been a spectator since late in the third quarter, amounting to roughly an hour of real time spent on the bench since he was last on the floor. As his coach feared, Valanciunas was more than a little rusty, playing 25 seconds in the first OT frame and the bulk of the second until Casey opted to go with Tyler Hansbrough to close the game in the third and final period of extra time. "It really wasnt fair to Jonas," Casey said in hindsight, following his teams marathon 134-129 loss to Washington. "It wasnt his fault." Upon reentering, Toronto immediately ran a pick-and-roll for Valanciunas, however the pass from Greivis Vasquez - who was trapped on the right elbow - was mistimed and ultimately deflected before it reached Valanciunas in the middle of the key, the turnover charged to Vasquez. A few minutes later, Valanciunas received the ball on the left block and with the clock winding down he flipped up a quick shot that was swatted by Marcin Gortat, his first of two field goal attempts in the period, both blocked by Gortat. With just over one minute remaining in double OT, the game tied at 116, Valanciunas negated a Vasquez runner, needlessly tipping in the shot that was already on its way down, above the cylinder. The look of frustration on the sophomores face said it all. This was not his night. The Raptors were outscored by 14 points in the 29 minutes that Valanciunas was on the floor. "I feel really sad," Valanciunas lamented, with his head down after the game. "I feel really bad right now. I could do a much better job than what I did." Valanciunas lost more than his rhythm, sitting as long as he did in the second half of Thursdays ball game. His confidence appeared to be at an all-time low. The second-year centre has had a rough couple of weeks, averaging 7.1 points and 7.6 rebounds, shooting 45 per cent in 24 minutes per in his last eight games. Over the previous eight contests, he put up averages of 15.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, shot 58 per cent from the field and logged just over 29 minutes a night. Perhaps fatigue has played a factor - he eclipsed his minute total from his rookie season last week - but the most noticeable variation in his approach hinders on an immeasurable concept that he has downplayed in the past. Swagger. Valanciunas is a different animal when he plays with that edge, anger and fire, when he gets outside of his head, stops over-thinking the game and just plays basketball. Too often you can almost see his thought process on the court, his movements are robotic as he aims to avoid disaster, fearful of making a mistake that will draw the ire of his head coach. However, hes at his best when he plays freely and Casey knows it. "The key is patience, not getting down on yourself, have fun," Casey said after morning shoot-around on Thursday. "I mean youre playing basketball. Theres no pressure on JV to produce. The pressure is on DeMar (DeRozan) and Kyle (Lowry) and Amir, the older guys." Given the unreasonably high preseason expectations its easy to overlook the fact that Valanciunas is still only 21-year-old, playing in his first full season after missing a sizeable chunk of his rookie campaign due to injury. Hes had an eventful year, participating in Summer League for the Raptors and competing with Lithuania in the FIBA qualifying tournament during the offseason. Hes still learning the NBA game, getting fully accustomed to his surroundings and most importantly finding his way as a player. None of that is lost of Casey, who refuses to put the cart before the horse when it comes to the development of his young centre. "I told him to stay with it," Casey said after Valanciunas logged just 17 minutes in Tuesdays win over Cleveland. "Right now hes pressing so much. [I] just told him to relax [and] play basketball." On account of their unexpected success this season the Raptors ultimate objective has been altered slightly. Although theyre now looking ahead to the playoffs and hoping to make some noise come April, their primary goal has not changed. Casey is still focused on developing his young players, namely Valanciunas and fellow sophomore Terrence Ross. "The hardest thing to do is to develop and win at the same time," Casey said. "Luckily weve got some wins and these guys are developing at the same time. Its the hardest thing to do because a lot of times theyre in there when they really dont deserve to, not as much lately but in the first part of the year." However, Casey wont coddle either sophomore with unconditional playing time. Valanciunas, like Ross, has had the opportunity to play and learn through his mistakes but the criteria for remaining on the floor long enough to do so has been made clear since the get go. "Offensively right now, hes not making his post moves, but thats going to come," Casey said. "Get some sweat shots, get some tip-ins, go to the offensive boards, screen. Do some of the sweat jobs and that will help him get his rhythm in the post." The process is gradual and, as Casey reminds us, its not going to happen overnight. Valanciunas possesses the ability, the desire and the work ethic to be a top tier NBA centre but its not going to happen in the middle of his second season. It takes time and no one in the Raptors organization will rush him. For now, Valanciunas is a matchup play. His minutes will continue to be sporadic as Casey leans on quicker, more experienced and versatile defenders in Johnson and Patterson some nights, depending on the opponent and whichever version of Valanciunas comes to play. Through it all, he cant lose focus and most importantly he cant lose his confidence. Hes got to keep his head up - on and off the floor - continue to work and learn whether hes in the game or on the bench. The Raptors are exercising patience with their young big man but he needs to be patient with himself. The Tigers did not disclose financial terms of the agreement, but MLB.com reports it to be worth $19.75 million. Its the largest one-year contract for an arbitration-eligible player prior to free agency, topping the $15.25 million deal the Tigers and pitcher Max Scherzer worked out last season. Scherzer, who also turned down a multi-year contract from the Tigers, is still on the open market as a free agent. Price can become a free agent next year, but the two sides can still work toward a multi-year deal. The left-hander joined the Tigers last July in a trade with Tampa Bay and was 4-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 11 starts after the deal. In 34 starts overall, Price was 15-12 with a 3.26 ERA. Price won the 2012 Cy Young with Tampa Bay and is a four-time All-Star.dddddddddddd He owns a career record of 86-51 with a 3.21 ERA in 186 games, all but five as a starter. The Tigers also agreed to terms with two other arbitration-eligible players on Friday, outfielder J.D. Martinez and pitcher Alfredo Simon. Martinez is coming off a breakout 2014 campaign in which the former Houston Astro hit .315 and set career bests of 23 home runs and 76 RBI in just 441 at- bats. Detroit acquired the 27-year-old off waivers from the Astros in late March. Simon earned a spot on the 2014 National League All-Star team and won a career-high 15 games for Cincinnati last season, with the right-hander posting a 3.44 ERA over 32 starts. The Tigers obtained Simon in a trade with the Reds during the Winter Meetings in December. SAN ANTONIO -- Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. unanimously outpointed Bryan Vera in a super middleweight rematch Saturday night at the Alamodome, rebounding from perhaps the worst performance of his career. Chavez (48-1-1) had winning scores of 114-113, 114-113 and 117-110. The Mexican fighter consistently scored with a big overhand right, his first landing squarely while Vera (23-8) was on the ropes in the third round in the non-title fight. Chavez capped it off with a jarring straight right in the middle of the ring in the 10th. Appearing to have a safe lead, Chavez mostly circled the ring and danced in the final round. Vera had a point taken away in the eighth when, while on the ropes, the Texan pulled down on Chavez from behind his head. In September, Chavez struggled while outpointing Vera in a disputed unanimous decision. Chavez failed to make weight, forfeited a six-figure portion of his purse and appeared to allow Vera to win the later rounds. Chavez appears to have revived his career and likely is in line for a title shot. It was his second fight in the past 17 months after a marijuana suspension in 2013 and a DUI in 2012. LISBON, Portugal -- Cristiano Ronaldo has two Champions League winner medals to show off along with his two world player of the year awards. That is, when hes done showing off his ripped physique. Ronaldos penalty at the end of extra time Saturday sealed a 4-1 victory for Real Madrid over Atletico Madrid, which led deep into stoppage time after 90 minutes. The 29-year-old Portuguese star then ripped off his shirt in celebration and struck a pose showing off his muscles. Soon, Ronaldo was being hugged by Portugals state president, Anibal Cavaco Silva, and patted on the back by Spains King Juan Carlos before collecting his medal from UEFA President Michel Platini -- who also hugged him. Just another night of Ronaldo being soccers biggest showman and undisputed current best player. "Since day one at the club Ive felt ready for this," said the Madrid star after helping end the clubs wait since 2002 for a coveted 10th European title in his fifth season there. "The pressure is making me a better player. It was worth risking (my injury) since were champions," Ronaldo told reporters. The Madrid star now heads to Brazil to cap his stellar season at the World Cup, where Group G rivals Germany, the United States and Ghana await him. Ronaldo will arrive with confidence peaking, even if his finishing fell from his own absurdly high standards Saturday. His 51st goal of the season came from his ninth attempt, including two trademark free kicks which tested Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois within his limits. One missed second-half chance seemed scripted for Ronaldo: hanging high to meet a Sergio Ramos cross, neck muscles tightening to drive his forehead at the ball. An untypically tame connection glanced tthe ball wide.dddddddddddd Six years ago, in his first Champions League final, Ronaldo met the moment and ball to arrow his header into Chelseas goal and give Manchester United the lead in Moscow. The eventual manner of victory in 2008 was as dramatic as Saturdays proved. Then, Ronaldo was the only Man United player to have his penalty saved in a shootout, before Chelsea captain John Terry struck a post with the potentially decisive kick. When Edwin van der Sar sealed victory with a save, Ronaldo lay crying in the centre circle alone as teammates raced toward the goalkeeper. Still, Man Uniteds European title helped propel Ronaldo over great rival Lionel Messi in January 2009 to win his first FIFA world player award. Messi beat Ronaldo in the next Champions League final, scoring in Barcelonas 2-0 win. That night in Rome announced Messis rise above Ronaldo in footballs firmament. Confirmation came with Messis election to the FIFA honour for an unprecedented four straight years. Ronaldo stopped the streak in January on another tearful evening. His young son Cristiano stood beside him on stage and Pele also wept at this shoulder. The accolade was acclaimed as reward for hard work to hone his body and raise an already prolific scoring record. There were no tears Saturday, and Ronaldo was at the heart of the party. It was in the same Stadium of Light in Lisbon that Ronaldo lost in his first major final -- a stunning 1-0 upset for Greece over host Portugal in the 2004 European Championship. With this measure of redemption, Ronaldo closed on the three Champions League titles held by 26-year-old Messi. The World Cup stage offers Ronaldo the stage to show he can also close the gap in world player honours. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- An early warning from the plate umpire stopped any more trouble on the field between the Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers. It didnt seem to put an end to the ill will, though. Jeremy Hellickson earned his fifth June win and the Rays beat Detroit 3-1 Sunday in a game that got off to a tense start. Both benches were warned by umpire Vic Carapazza after Detroits Rick Porcello hit Ben Zobrist with a pitch in the first inning. Both dugouts stayed calm and nothing further developed. Rays manager Joe Maddon didnt particularly like seeing Zobrist get plunked. "I thought it was absolutely uncalled for, and hopefully the league will take a look at it," Maddon said. The Rays did not retaliate Sunday, but Maddon added "theres many more opportunities to play good, hard baseball, and we will." A day earlier, Miguel Cabrera yelled at the Tampa Bay dugout after he struck out in the 10th inning. Fernando Rodney had thrown a high-and-tight fastball before fanning the Tigers star. "I dont debate, this guy is outstanding," Maddon said of Cabrera. "Hes wonderful. I just wish he wouldnt cry so much." Zobrist walked to first base after being struck on the wrist with two outs and no one on base. "I just assumed it would happen today at some point because of what was said last night," Zobrist said. "I just said to one of the umpires on the way to first, I was like, Hey, that was intentional. You guys know it. I think we should do something about that. But they chose not to." Maddon pointed out that Jhonny Peralta took an in-tight pitch from Rodney on Sunday and there was no response. "Peralta got the same pitch that Cabrera got last night, with the same kind of a moment, and nobodys worried about Peralta," Maddon said. "So, if Im Jhonny Peralta, Im upset right now. Im not getting that same kind of reaction from everybody that Cabrera got last night. Overreaction, no reaction." Porcello said he was surprised by the warning. "I tried to throw a fastball in and it just got away from me," Porcello said. Before Sundays game, Detroit manager Jim Leyland said "thats history" when asked about the Cabrera incident. After Saturdays game, however, Leyland said: "Throwing in that area is not acceptable, and somebody pays the price for that throughout baseball. Thats just the way baseball is." "History repeated itself in the first inning," Maddon said. Leyland said "nobodys trying to hit anybody." "What do you want to talk about?" Leyland said. "Thats part of baseball. Guys get hit in baseball games. Thats nothing new. We got three guys hit last week, we hit a couple guys last week. Thats all part of the game. A guy got hit. Big deal." Hellickson (7-3) allowed one run over six-plus innings. He tied the team record for victories in one month held by Matt Moore, David Price and Scott Kazmir. "Thats outstanding," Maddon said. Rodney pitched the ninth for his 17th save. Cabrera hit his 25th homer this season for the Tigers, sending a shot into a fish tank beyond the wall. Porcello stumbled while in his delivery when facing Zobrist in the third and threw a pitch that landed well in front of the plate. Porcello (4-6) went six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits. Cabrera, booed before each of his at-bats, tied it at 1 with a fourth-inning homer that gave him a 15-game hitting streak. His drive was the second -- joining Luis Gonzalezs shot in 2007 -- to go into the fish tank just to the right of centre field that is home to a group of cownose rays. James Loney extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the second and scored on a single by Jose Lobaton to put the Rays up 1-0. Lobaton drove in another run with a single during a two-run fourth that made it 3-1. Yunel Escobar had a bases-loaded walk in the inning. Hellickson left with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh. Reliever Jake McGee bailed out the Rays starter by retiring three straight batters to end the threat. "That was unbelievable," Hellickson said. "To get out of that was pretty amazing." NOTES: Leyland, this years AL All-Star team manager, supports the idea that all teams have a player in the contest. "You can get a lot of arguments because its probably not a true All-Star team when you have to have somebody from every team, but I love the fact that every uniform is represented at the All-Star game," Leyland said. "I think thats really a nice touch." ... Rays 3B Evan Longoria (plantar fasciitis) missed his second consecutive game. ... Denny McLain, the majors last 30-game winner, was at the ballpark. He did it in 1968 with the Tigers. ... Cabrera went 1 for 4 and had his major league-best batting average drop two points to .373. Jonas Hector Jersey .ca. "Hes the type of player youd like to think could finish his career as a Cardinal," St. Louis chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt said Saturday. St. Louis began contract talks with Carpenter in August. Both sides characterized the negotiations smooth. "It was not one of those where we were sitting there debating all of Matts faults or his weaknesses, because there werent any," St. Louis General Manager John Mozeliak said. "Hes really a special person not only on the field but off the field." The deal includes a team option for a seventh year in 2020 at $18.5 million. Should the St. Louis decline the option, they would pay Carpenter a $2-million buyout. "For a baseball junkie like myself, I cant think of a better place to play than the city of St. Louis," Carpenter said. "Busch Stadium, I still pinch myself every time I make that drive to the field. "Playing in front of these fans, the city of St. Louis, Cardinal baseball as a whole, its just so much fun. Its such a privilege to put on this jersey. Its something I dont take lightly at all." Carpenters agent, Bryan Cahill, said the 28-year-old received a $1-million signing bonus and will make $1.55 million this season.dddddddddddd The salary escalates each year, reaching $14.5 million in 2019. Carpenter hit .318 while leading the National League in hits (199), doubles (55) and runs (126) last season and playing mostly second base. He is moving back to third this season, where he has played most of his professional career. He earned his first all-star selection in 2013 and finished fourth in MVP voting. A 13th-round draft choice out of TCU in 2009, Carpenters first full season in the majors was 2012. Carpenter switched to second during last spring training and started 128 games as a middle infielder in 2013. He also played 24 games at third. Known in the clubhouse for his work ethic and daily preparation, it hasnt taken Carpenter long to take on a leadership role. Hes made an impact not only on the younger Cardinals, but also on the veterans. "They cant help but watch," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "OK, how did this guy get on the board all of the sudden? "Hows he in the MVP running? Where did this come from? They cant help but translate the work thats put in and the discipline." He fought back emotion at Saturdays press conference. "I realize what a responsibility this is for me," Carpenter said. "Im really looking forward to living up to this and continuing being part of such a great organization." Besides Canada, the U.S., Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Finland, the league and union will announce a European All-Star team will participate. That team will be stocked with players who come from countries other than those participating as nations. Also, the tournament will feature a team with North American players under the age of 23. An executive with an NHL sponsor confirmed the details to TSN. The tournament will also feature a best-of-three final, which will help to drive up the broadcast and sponsor rights for the tournament both in North America and Europe. The National Hockey League and its players association have told team executives they hope to generate between $75 million and $100 million from the rekindled World Cup of Hockey. A person familiar with the matter told TSN that the tournament, which is scheduled to be held in September 2016, will raise about half its revenue from the sale of broadcast and internet streaming rights. The NHL and NHLPA have predicted those rights may garner close to $50 million. Its a gamble to spend so much on a tournament like the World Cup when theres no guarantee Team Canada will advance beyond the round robin portion. But if it does, there could be a big payoff in TV ratings. The final of the World Cup will be a best-of-three format, TSN has learned. Besides TV rights, the NHL and NHLPA will also sell sponsorship rights to the World Cup. They anticipate selling to eight premier corporate sponsors and negotiating deals of at least $1.5 million in each category, a source told TSN. The NHL and NHLPA will also garner revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. However, its expected that the NHL and the Players Association will have to pay Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment at least $5 million for hosting the three-week tournament. While executives with the Montreal Canadiens wanted to host some of the World Cup games at the Bell Centre, the NHL and its players union decided to host all of the games in Toronto. That way, if the tournament is a success, they could auction off the rights to host the gamees in 2019, perhaps, to the city that offers the best revenue guarantee - be it Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Moscow, or another city.dddddddddddd To be sure, there are still many unanswered questions about how much profit the NHL and players union will generate from the World Cup. They need to pay for insurance for all of the players. Typically, the NHL and the Players Association buy premiums that offer better coverage than simply career-ending policies. Payouts are rare, but they do happen. The Islanders John Tavares, for instance, was covered by an insurance policy when he was injured during the Winter Olympics earlier this year in Sochi, Russia. The Islanders were compensated by an insurance company for the time he missed. Its unclear how much insurance will cost the NHL and NHLPA. Then Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said last August that it would cost at least $1 million simply to pay for insurance for the 47 Canadian players invited to Team Canada workouts in advance of the Winter Olympics. NHL player agent Allan Walsh said some NHL players have been skeptical over whether its a good idea to steer away from the national team concept. Some players believe this should be limited to players playing for their country, Walsh told TSN. What are you playing for if its Team Young Guns or European All Stars? What are you playing for? Thats a problem. Its an issue. Walsh said featuring a young guns team particularly could lead to lopsided scores. The downside is that team gets pounded, Walsh said. I dont think it would have an impact on the players psychology or career - just an impact on the legitimacy of the team in the tournament, when people sit back and say whether this kind of team was a good or bad idea. Still, Walsh and other agents said there could be a great payoff for the league from marketing a team built around young stars like Nathan McKinnon, Connor McDavid and Jonathan Drouin. Walsh said that while some fans have called for the NHL and NHLPA to include teams from Slovakia or Slovenia, that might not be practical, since the tournament is run by the league and its players association - both of which want to use the event to build the profile of their own players, not those playing in leagues overseas. LONDON -- Arsenal remains on course for another season in the Champions League after beating Newcastle 3-0 at home on Monday. The win puts Arsenal four points clear of Everton in fourth place with two games to play in the Premier League, a position which would qualify the club for Europes top competition for the 17th straight year. Having been contained for the first quarter of the match, the hosts found their rhythm after defender Laurent Koscielny gave the Gunners the lead in the 26th minute when he poked in from close range a well-placed free kick from Santi Cazorla. Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski went close to doubling the lead, notably when his powerful header from six-yards out was parried away by Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul. Arsenal went two up in the 42nd minute when midfielder Mesut Ozil tapped in from close range after Krul saved two efforts from Olivier Giroud, the second of which fell comfortably into the path of the Germany international. Ozil then became the provider in the 66th minute when his whipped cross was powerfully headed into the net by Giroud. The win means that one more victory in the final two games will be enough to confirm a Champions League spot for Arsenal next season. Everton takes on Manchester City at home on Saturday in a game that also has huge implications for the title race between City, Liverpool and Chelsea. Arsenal then plays West Bromwich Albion at home on Sunday. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is taking nothing for granted, though. "To get over the line is always difficult," he said. As well as qualifying for the lucrative Champions League, Arsenal is hoping to lift its first trophy in nine years when it takes on Hull in the FA Cup Final on May 17 at Wembley Stadium. Newcastle chances were few and far though winger Yoan Gouffran had a good chance to halve the deficit early on in the second half but he shot straight at Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny when through on goal. The defeat was Newcastles sixth straight loss and ratcheted up the pressure on manager Alan Pardew. Despite that ignominious run, the club remains in ninth place following a strong first half to the season. The match was also Pardews first on the touchline since a seven-game suspension for head-butting Hulls David Meyler -- the longest suspension ever handed down to a Premier League manager. A section of the 2,000 or so Newcastle fans who made the trip down from the northeast of England turned against Pardew in the second half. "We want Pardew out" and "Six in a row" boomed down from the away section as they grew increasingly restless. Pardew conceded the second half of the season has not been good enough and said the fans had the right to vent their frustrations. "Theyve seen us lose again and theyre not happy and I have to respect that," he said. A person briefed on the U.S. Olympic Committees decision-making process told The Associated Press on Friday that all four cities are still in consideration. The person requested anonymity because the USOC has not made an official announcement. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The other three cities would be first-time hosts. But theres an arduous and expensive process facing any potential bid city before the International Olympic Committee awards the games in 2017. Over the next six months, the USOC will decide whether it even wants to try to host the Olympics. The last two U.S. candidates both suffered humiliating fourth-place finishes: New York for the 2012 Olympics and Chicago for the 2016 Games that went to Rio de Janeiro If the USOC goes ahead with the bid, the U.S. ccity would find itself in a spirited battle.dddddddddddd Paris, Rome, Doha and Istanbul are among those that could enter the race. The IOC has also long stated a desire to bring the Olympics to Africa for the first time. Some inside the USOC feel the time is right for a bid, now that the federation has made progress in shoring up some of its international relationships, which were frayed in 2009 when Chicago finished last in the voting for the 2016 Games. The USOC is waiting to see what sort of changes the IOC might make in the bidding process when it meets later this year. New IOC President Thomas Bach is asking the committee to build a new roadmap for the Olympics, and the way the IOC handles bids is expected to be on that agenda. "We clearly want to see output from that working group and what changes are adopted before we push the go button on 2024," USOC chairman Larry Probst said earlier this week. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and reckless driving after he drove a car into a bicyclist and fled, police said. Culliver was driving a white Ford Mustang just before 10:30 a.m. Friday when he hit the cyclist Friday morning near downtown San Jose, city police spokesman Albert Morales said. The bicyclist wasnt seriously hurt, he said. A witness followed the Culliver, 25, who also drove into the car of the witness, Morales said, and that vehicle blocked the suspects car until police arrived and arrested Culliver. After searching the suspects car, the authorities found illegal brass knuckles and booked him into Santa Clara County Jail for felony hit and run, felony reckless driving with injury, felony possession of brass knuckles, misdemeanour hit and run and misdemeanour driving on a suspended license. Morales said he didnt know the name of Cullivers attorney. "The 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Chris Culliver," San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. "We will remain in contact with Chris and the local authorities as we continue to gather the facts regarding this situation. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time." In 2013, Culliver caused controversy by expressing anti-gay sentiments in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. During Super Bowl media day at the Superdome in New Orleans that year, Culliver responded to questions from comedian Artie Lange by saying he wouldnt welcome a gay player in the locker room. He also said the 49ers didnt have any homosexual players and, if they did, those players should leave. He later apologized, facing a large group of Super Bowl media members for nearly an hour. Culliver underwent sensitivity training as well and began doing outreach work with The Trevor Project, an organization that provides crisis and suicide intervention to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. "I truly appreciate the staff at the Trevor Project for allowing me to grow and educating me on the issues affecting the LGBTQ community," Culliver later said in a statement to The Associated Press. "I have learned so much and made some really great friends. I will continue my commitment to the organization and to their youths and stand firm with hope that one day that all individuals regardless of sex, race, or creed will be treated with dignity and respect from all." Culliver, a third-round draft pick in 2011 out of South Carolina, made 47 tackles with two interceptions and a forced fumble during the 2012 season while starting six games for the Niners. VANCOUVER - The New York Rangers knew exactly what to expect from the Vancouver Canucks and made them pay dearly.Mats Zuccarello scored twice and Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves Saturday as New York steamrolled Vancouver 5-1 by taking advantage of the Canucks tendency to pinch their defence at the opposing teams blue-line.The Rangers scored on three odd-man rushes in quick succession to effectively put the game out of reach before it was seven minutes old.We pre-scouted, our coaches talked about that a lot, said New York defenceman Ryan McDonagh, who opened the scoring. It was going to be a big job for our wingers to either hold onto pucks or not get it back to them or get it out of the zone.We were able to do that right away in the first period and we got some good looks because of it.J.T. Miller and Marc Staal had the other goals for New York (13-10-4), while Rick Nash and Derick Brassard each added two assists. We talked about them pinching, said Lundqvist, whose team hadnt played since Monday and had lost two of its last three. I didnt think they were going to go that hard every time. It was almost like a 50-50 puck they were going for it and we made them pay, especially in the first period.Nick Bonino had the only goal for Vancouver (18-10-2), while Ryan Miller made 18 stops in taking the ugly loss.Theres no excuse for that. We know that weve got to be better than that, said Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins. Sometimes theres nights like this. Theyre never acceptable, but the only thing we can do is get better. We have no choice. The only choice we have is to get better. The Canucks were playing at home for the first time since Nov. 25 after wrapping up a season-long seven-game road trip that saw them go a respectable 3-3-1, but finish with consecutive defeats in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Desjardins said changes will be coming in his teams approach ahead of Wednesdays home tilt against the Dallas Stars. You play a certain way and we played a certain way and now were getting caught on it, he said. We try to play an aggressive style and when it doesnt work it goes the other way and it was going the other way tonight.I think we have to make some adjustments in the system. After a bad pinch from defenceman Ryan Stanton — one of many culprits on this night — Jesper Fast fed McDonagh on a 3-on-1 break for his first of the season at 2:36 of the opening period to make it 1-0.The Rangers then somehow broke in on a 4-on-1 rush shortly after that failed to connect before J.T. Miller buried his third of the season on a 2-on-1 break with a nice move to the backhand at 3:19.Zuccarello continued the onslaught at 6:46 on another 3-on-1, ripping home his fifth of the campaign as New York scored on three straight shots.Wrong decisions all over the ice, said Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. Forwards not coming back, not keeping the third guy high, defence pinching when they shouldnt. On every one of those you can point out three or four mistakes. Its not just one guy, its from all five guys on the ice.Ryan Miller couldnt be faulted on any of the goals, but still felt the sting of being down three so early at home.We got caught a few times and they made the odd-man rushes count. I would have liked to have been a little bit more available to make a save for the boys, but it didnt work out, he said. They set up some plays and made them count.Staal made it 4-1 at 7:17 of the second when his first of the season found its way through a screen past Ryan Miller, who looked especially frustrated and shrugged his shoulders as the Rangers celebrated at the Canucks blue-line.New Yorks Martin St. Louis was awarded a penalty shot just over five minutes later after getting hooked on a breakaway, but he couldnt beat the Vancouver goalie. But any good feeling didnt last long as Zuccarello scored his second of the night and sixth of the season with 2:21 left in the period by tapping home a slick pass from Brassard.Youve got to give yourself a chance to win and we didnt, said Desjardins. We cant blame anybody but ourselves in the structure. Its the not the players, its the coaches. Its my fault. If were getting scored on like that then weve got to do some adjustments system-wise. Weve all got to get better. The one thing about games like that is you just realize you need each other. You cant do it by yourself. One guy cant do it, you need each other. As a group weve got to get better.Vancouver finally got on the board when Bonino broke Lundqvists shutout bid at 4:20 of the third with his eighth of the season and first in 16 games, but it was far too late to influence an outcome that was decided early.Youre going to go through a season, youre going to have to find a way to dig out of things, said Miller. This is our first opportunity to have to dig out of a hole thats a little deeper than usual. See how we respond here. Youre not going to go 82 (games) without a stretch like this. For us to be a team that is going to do anything worthwhile at the end of the season were going to have to learn how to handle ourselves emotionally and handle the adjustments we need to make and go from here.Id like to see a nice response next game and well see if were ready to dig out or just dig it deeper.Notes: Boninos goal was his first point in seven games. ... Saturday marked the Rangers first game outside of the Eastern time zone since the season opener against St. Louis. ... The 21-year-old, obtained Apr. 4 in a trade with the Philadelphia Union, headed in a goal just before halftime and surprised himself with a blind shot in off a post in the second half as the Impact downed the slumping Houston Dynamo 3-0. Marco Di Vaio added a late goal as the Impact (3-7-5) followed up a strong 0-0 draw in Vancouver on Wednesday with a win that gave them points in consecutive games for the time since April. After a horrendous start to the season, the Impact are 2-1-1 in its last four. Three of their next four games are on the road, where Montreal has yet to win this season, starting Saturday at Chivas USA in California. "It was important after the (World Cup) break to get a point in Vancouver and important to have consistency and follow that with a good result," said Klopas. "We have to build on this." The Dynamo (5-10-2) have been outscored 13-0 while losing five games in a row. Houston had Honduran midfielder Boniek Garcia back from the World Cup in Brazil but is still missing U.S. international Brad Davis. It was a prime chance for Montreal to get a much-needed points. While the Impact controlled most of the match and outshot Houston 17-8, it took McInerneys soft touch around the net to bag the three points. The striker known as Jack Mac has been everything the Impact hoped for when they sent 2012 first overall draft pick Andrew Wenger to Philadelphia. McInerney has six goals in eight MLS matches since joining the Impact (he had one for the Union before the trade), and added three more in Voyageurs Cup play. "Hes a pure striker," said Klopas. "He might not do anything or he might not be involved in the buildup, but then boom. One opportunity. "Its been good for him here working with Marco. The runs he makes are very similar." Added McInerney: "Its the way Ive always been. I dont do anything for 89 minutes and I get one chance and I usually put it away." He got his first of the night in the 42nd minute as he broke toward the goal and headed a pass from fullback Eric Miller past goalie Tally Hall. Then he added an impressive one in the 75th, putting the ball in off a post on a bicycle kick with his back to the net, after Justin Mapp beat a defender and lobbed a pass in front. "I got a little lucky," said McInerney. "Just make solid contact and whatever happens." The smile of disbelief on Di Vaios face afterward showed even the former Bolgna striker was impressed. "(Di Vaio) didnt say anytthing, but someone told me he was screaming at me to leave it," said McInerney.dddddddddddd "But I dont think he can be too mad at me." The Impact hope their season is turning around. With the win, Montreal improved from last in the eastern conference, and are now tied for ninth with the Chicago Fire with 14 points. The Impact got centreback Matteo Ferrari back earlier in the week and both Di Vaio and Mapp returned from injuries for the Houston game. Both started on the bench and came on in the second half. "Its good moving forward," said Mapp. "The first part of the season didnt go the way we wanted, obviously, but if you can put two or three wins together, youre right back in the mix. It gives us confidence going forward." Captain Patrice Bernier said McInerneys second goal may be a sign that balls that wouldnt go in earlier in the campaign are now starting to find the net. A tap-in goal for Di Vaio after Hall only got a hand on Andres Romeros shot was also a plus. It was only the second in an injury-plagued season for the striker who had 20 goals in 2013. There was silence in the Houston locker room. The Dynamo have not scored in a league game since May 17, a club record span of 479 minutes. That nearly ended 30 minutes in when Omar Cummings volley of a long pass from Giles Barnes struck the post. Instead, the Impact and goalie Troy Perkins got consecutive clean sheets for the first time since last August. "Its the way things are going," said Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear, who was in no mood to talk after the defeat. Asked what his team needs to do to get out of its slump, he said: "Win a game. It gives you confidence." Saputo Stadium has been a tough place for Houston the last two seasons. In 2013, they were outscored 7-0 in a pair of losses in Montreal. The Dynamo do much of the same when Montreal visits Houston, including a 1-0 win there earlier this season. The stadium was mostly quiet through the first half as a group of their main supporters protested the expulsion of some members at the teams last home game for lighting flares. Notes: Miller made his first start since April 19 for Montreal in place of Karl Ouimette, while Felipe returned to take the injured Issey Nakajima-Farrans (hamstring) spot in midfield. Felipe missed a game while his wife had a baby. . . Di Vaio and Mapp returned from injury and both went on in the second half. . . Dynamo forward Will Bruin and defender Corey Ashe were back after missing a U.S. Open Cup match with injuries, while Ricardo Clark and Brian Ownby, both returning from concussions, were on the bench. Ownby replaced Cummings in the 58th minute. OTTAWA -- The New Jersey Devils hate shootouts and for good reason. The Devils could only cringe as they watched Erik Karlsson score the winner in the shootout, lifting the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win Thursday night. The Devils are now 0-12 in shootouts this season. New Jersey goaltender Cory Schneider was visibly disgusted by yet another shootout loss. "Take one of our quotes from any point this year and apply it to tonight," said Schneider, who faced 32 shots. "Its the same result." Jaromir Jagr didnt know whether to laugh or cry at the Devils fate. "Its frustrating, no question about it," said Jagr. "(The shootout) probably cost us the playoffs, but youve got no other choice but to work on it." Karlsson is now 1-2 in shootouts this season and said he enjoys the challenge of scoring under pressure. "Its a fun thing to do," said Karlsson. "It feels like weve been pretty successful over the course of the year, but its obviously always nice to score." Although eliminated from the playoffs the Senators, who have now won three in a row, are hoping to finish the season strong. "Thats why we play this sport, its to win games," Karlsson said. "Even though we havent done it on a regular basis this year like we wanted to thats what were going to keep playing for no matter where we are in the standings and it feels good to put a couple together." Mike Hoffman also scored for the Senators (35-31-14) as Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots to win his third straight game. Michael Ryder scored his 18th of the season for the Devils (34-29-17). The game was forced into overtime as neither was able to break a 1-1 tie through the third. With 35 seconds remaining in overtime the Senators went on the power play, but were unable to take advantage. Overtime proved to be the best part of the game. The Devils had a great chance on a 3-on-1, but Lehner stopped Jagr and at the other end Schneider robbed Chris Phillips from in close. By the end of overtime Jagr had been stopped three times, including on a breakaway. Lehner felt good about his game, especially the stops he made on Jagr. "Hes a great player so its fun to see him come down the ice," said Lehner. "You want to stop him." The game lacked any intensity for the first 30 minutes and looked like two teams who missed the playoffs playing out the season. Devils coach Peter DeBoer admitted his team was flat the first 10 minutes and attributed it to the team still dealing with the reality of not making the playoffs. New Jersey was officially eliminated Wednesday night. "You could see we were a little bit out of it," said DeBoer. "There was a little bit of a hangover, but I thought once we started getting into the game and started to move and we carried the play. We should have had more than one goal." The first excitement for the 19,270 on hand at Canadian Tire Place came midway through the second when Ales Hemsky was awarded a penalty shot after being pulled down by Marek Zidlicky. Hemsky made little of the opportunity as he shot wide of the net. "We were a little sloppy early on, but I thought after that we woke up and generated chances and played our game," said Schneider. "A little more up and down than we would have liked, but at least it was an entertaining game." The play did, however, seem to inspire the Senators as they scored a minute later when Mika Zibanejad made a pass back to a trailing Hoffman. Zibanejad played just two shifts in the third period before leaving the game. He was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. The Senators gave details on the nature of his injury. The Devils tied it at the 17-minute mark of the period as the Senators were unable to clear a rebound and Tim Sestito found Ryder through traffic. A scoreless first period saw Ottawas Mark Stone miss on a great opportunity and Clarke MacArthur being robbed point blank. The Devils didnt register their first shot until the eight-minute mark. The Senators will play their last home game of the season Saturday when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs, while the Devils return home to wrap up the season. Notes: C Colin Greening returned to the Senators lineup after missing the last six games with a lower-body injury. ORLANDO, Fla. -- Scottie Wilbekin sat on the bench for the final minute, holding a bag of ice against his left knee. It was about the only time he wasnt giving Pittsburgh huge problems on both ends of the court. Wilbekin scored 21 points, including 11 of the teams 13 during a 7-minute stretch in the second half, and top-seeded Florida handled the Panthers 61-45 in the NCAA tournament Saturday. The Gators 28th consecutive win put them in the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year. The latest victory followed a lacklustre and head-scratching performance in the teams NCAA opener against Albany two days earlier. The Gators vowed to play with more energy and intensity, and Wilbekin spearheaded the effort. "We just wanted to come out and not let them play harder than us or not play as hard as we can," Wilbekin said. "I think we did a good job of having our energy up at the start of the game, and we played together on offence and played together on defence." Wilbekin took over in the second half, scoring eight consecutive points at one point. Patric Young wasnt too shabby, either, finishing with seven points and eight rebounds. Will Yeguete added eight points -- all in the paint. Michael Frazier II chipped in 10 points for the Gators. Frazier was just 2-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Had Florida not been cold from behind the arc, the game would have been essentially over much sooner than it was. The Gators finished 5 of 20 from 3-point range, with at least five of those rimming in and out. Florida will face either fourth-seeded UCLA or 12th-seeded Stephen F. Austin on Thursday in the South Regional in Memphis, Tenn. The Bruins and Lumberjacks play Sunday in San Diego. The Gators have the longest current streak of Sweet 16 appearances -- and expect to go further. If Wilbekin continues to play like he did against the Panthers, Florida surely improves its chances of making another deep run in the tournament. "It was good to see him come back and respond the way he did today," coach Billy Donovan said. "I thought all the way around he played very well. ... He was great on both ends of the floor because he really gives it up on the defensive end, and when you give it up like that and youre the point guard, theres a physical toll that your body takes over a period of time." Wilbekin ended up getting iced down after banging knees with a defender. He got a well-deserved standing ovation as he limped off the court. "Hes a great point guard," Panthers forward Lamar Patterson said. "He took care of business." Wilbekin hit a running 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer and drained a back-breaking 3 with 8:24 remaining that gave Florida its largest lead at that point, 45-31. His consecutive floaters inside 5 minutes to play were equally troublesome for Pitt. The Panthers, who seemed focused on Young inside and Frazier out, had no answer for Wilbekins dribble penetration. Wilbekin also was a force on the press, which helped force 11 turnovers and got the Panthers out of rhythm. Florida played the kind of defence that had to impress NFL coaches Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin. The Patriots and Steelers head men were on hand, with Belichick sitting behind Floridas bench in a white Gators visor and Tomlin sitting opposite Pitts bench in Panthers colours. Wilbekin really started to dominate as Pitt steadily wore down in the second half. "Got in the lane -- constantly," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. "Hes a senior, hes a really good player, hes been through some ups and downs, obviously, and hes had a great finish to his career, and thats what you hope happens to a kid that learns and gets better. They played well. Im sure theyre proud of him and what hes become, a local guy thats done well." Talib Zanna led the Panthers with 10 points, their only player in double figures. A lot was made of the inside matchup between Young and Zanna, two ripped centres who played well Thursday. But Wilbekin was the story in this one. His best play didnt even show up in the box score. Wilbekin saved one of the many loose balls Florida got to first, turned around and threw a strike to Casey Prather. Prather drove the lane and dropped the ball to Young for a dunk that energized the pro-Florida crowd. "I think just trying to get better in little areas, the small stuff, trying to be a better leader," said Wilbekin, who was suspended five games to start the season. "As far as how it translates on the court, I think its helped me become a better leader, be more connected with my teammates and coach. Its helped me play with a freer mind." Tracy Walker Jersey . In this space, I will be writing new and unique pieces about the team that you wont be able to find anywhere else. So naturally, in an attempt to come up with a fresh topic about the Ottawa Senators, I am going to start with a piece about their goaltending. Frank Ragnow Jersey .The rookie goalie made 36 saves to help the Calgary Flames blank their Pacific Division rivals 1-0 on Saturday following a 48-hour ordeal that included lost baggage, a cancelled flight and a new pair of contact lenses. http://www.authenticnfllionslockroom.co ... te-Jersey/. Kerryon Johnson Lions Jersey . -- The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with safety Brock Vereen and QB David Fales on four-year contracts.WASHINGTON - Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper doesnt think left wing Ryan Malones DUI and cocaine possession charges will be a distraction to the post-season-bound team. "Ryan is probably a little embarrassed of whats gone on. He made a poor decision, getting behind the wheel when he had alcohol in his system," Cooper said before Tampa Bay beat the Washington Capitals 1-0 in a shootout Sunday to close the regular season. "But for me, Ive watched all the good decisions Ryan Malones made in his life, and how charitable hes been and what a staple hes been in our community in the years hes been here," Cooper added. "I hope this one instance doesnt take away from that, because hes been a class act for us, on and off the ice." Malone didnt travel with the team to Washington. It isnt yet known what his status for the playoffs will be. Tampa Bay will host the Montreal Canadiens in the first round, with Game 1 scheduled for Wednesday. An officer saw Malones SUV strike a curb after making a left turn from the centre lane in the early hours of Saturday, Tampa Police Lt. Paul Lusczynski said. After being pulled over, Malone got out of his vehicle, and the officer smelled alcohol on his breath, Lusczynski said. According to the police report, the officer found 1.3 grams of cocaine in one of Malones pockets. "We talked about it as a team yesterday, and its a real unfortunate thing, but I dont think it was really on too many guys minds here today with the ... stakes of this game," Matthew Carle said after scoring the only goal in Sundays shootout. Malone refused to take field sobriety tests, but a breath test given at the jail recorded blood alcohol levels of 0.112 and 0.116 per cent, Lusczynski saaid.dddddddddddd Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08. Malone was released from the Hillsborough County jail on $2,500 bond. His car was impounded by police. "The one thing is, no matter what happens, regardless of anything, youre dealt with as a human being first, hockey player second. Thats how we deal with everything. ... So you want to look after your players in their life first," Cooper said, pausing at times to choose his words carefully. "Im happy everythings OK with Ryan. ... Ive spoken to Ryan. There is a whole process thats going to go through here. Its out of our hands." NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Saturday that Malone "is subject to mandatory evaluation" under the substance abuse program agreed to by the league and the players union, and "his future playing status" will be determined based on the terms of that program. "Lets just say nobodys perfect. We all make marginal decisions at one point in our life. I know Ive made them," Cooper said. "Hell let this be a learning experience for him," Cooper said, "and were really looking forward to getting him back at some point." Malone has five goals and 10 assists in 57 games this season for the Lightning. The 34-year-old forward is in his 10th NHL season, his sixth with Tampa Bay. He has 92 goals, 201 assists and 388 penalty minutes in his career. "Hockey-wise, weve had way more distractions worse than this one. This is more of a life issue that is a friend of ours that we know is physically doing OK. Hopefully the worst is over. This is moving onward and upward after that," Cooper said. "But as for the hockey, this wont be a distraction at all for us."
